Home My WebLink AboutGoderich Signal Star, 2017-05-24, Page 1010 Signal Star • Wednesday, May 24, 2017 Missing person not located (BRUCE PENINSULA, ON) -The Bruce Peninsula Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are continuing their investigation into the disap- pearance of 30 -year-old Niram SHOULDICE who was reported missing/overdue by family members on March 6, 2017. Investigators are request- ing all residents and sea- sonal cottagers to check their properties and build- ings, in the Lions Head and Ferndale area, over the May 24 weekend. Police believe the last known siting of Niram was in Ferndale on March 5, 2017 at approximately 7:00 p.m., in the Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula. The West Region Emer- gency Response Team (ERT), the West Region Canine Unit and the OPP Unmanned Aer- ial System (UAS) have con- ducted extensive searches of the Ferndale area with nega- tive results in locating Niram SHOULDICE. The UAS is a power driven aircraft, other than a model air- craft, that is operated without a flight crew member on board. This system can record and transmit images to assist with the search. The investigation is being conducted by the Bruce Penin- sula OPP. Crime Unit, with assistance from the Grey County OPP Crime Unit and under the direction of the Criminal Investigation Branch. Originally, the Horticultural Society suggested to put hives in more a public setting, such as down by the waterfront. According to information presented by Harris, the Town and by-law officers notified the Society that bees are not permitted in Goderich at all and had planned to ban all honeybee hives in Goderich. The Horticultural Society presented their reasons for why honeybees are harmless to humans but beneficial to the environment, such as flowers, plants or for natural honey. "Honeybees are bred to be very gentle and will only sting to defend themselves or their colony. When peopleare stung, they are usually stung by wasps, hor- nets and yellow jackets," explained Harris. "I want to see the honey- bee allowed in Goderich. I want Goderich honey; I want Goderich bees wax candles. If we have beehives that are regulated, and we have hon- eybees that are imported from Europe that are friendly, would you not rather have friendly bees pollinating all of our gardens?" According to Harris, hon- eybees exist in support of their colony and hives, and are not solitary and the Communities in Bloom pro- ject encourages bees and the pollination of bees. The honeybees are a spe- cies that are beneficial to the pollination that is needed for the health of flowers, plants and a balance' in the ecosystem. Perhaps the addition of hon- eybee hives in public or private property would encourage individuals to become bee- keepers themselves. The Horticultural Society would like to see the hives become part of the garden and outdoor activities if the Town were to pass a by-law allowing honeybee hives in Goderich. In addition, the Society suggested that they could place the hives on private property in order to not dis- turb the public or concern those in high traffic areas. "Ideally, I would like to see the Horticultural Society or individuals maintain bee- hives on vacant public land, away from homes and play areas, Harris said. Currently, there is no by-law that -states onecannot have bees on private property. Council suggested for this issue to be tabled and for provincial legislation and by- laws to be reviewed in order to come back with a decision of a possibility of where the hives might be placed.
