All `.Fore' the kids
Dear Editor,
All 'Fore' the kids at Woodlands
Golflinks was the course where a
record number of participants
'warmed up their swing' for some
spirited competition in the 12th
Charity Golf Tournament on Satur-
day, May 16.
The day was the culmination of
efforts to share the kid's stories and
their success that has truly touched
our hearts.
It was about raising awareness
and critical dollars for expensive,
life-saving equipment, education,
prevention programs and vital
breakthrough research - mission
accomplished.
I want to congratulate the top
team of Mark Duckworth, Ralphy
Rubino, Curtis Muxlow and Austin
O'Meara for their stellar
performance.
Sincere thanks to all participants
and sponsors for their generous
support.
To date, this one event has raised
over $25, 000 to support our local
London's Children's Hospital. -
Community support is para-
mount for our future leaders - our
kids.
"Ihanks for being part of the
MIRACLE TEAM and for making a
difference in a child's life.

Environmental concerns
Dear Editor,
I understand that the passage of
the bylaw now approves the site
plan for NRStor's proposed devel-
opment on the Mill Road meadow.
However, I believe that council
should consider taking a second
look at this complex issue by pass-
ing a second motion, which tables
the first motion, until the issues
noted below have been more fully
explored and answers provided.
I have concerns, which I believe
should be answered to the satisfac-
tion of the entire council and the
concerned public.
My earlier letters to council also
address some serious environ-
mental concerns, which I will not
repeat in this letter.
Will the health concerns of Dr
Bokout s, Acting Medical Officer of
Health for Huron County, as
expressed in a letter to council, dated
April 26, be adequately answered
prior to further site approval?
This is a pilot project.
A pilot project by its very nature
has risks and dangers, which can
only be fully assessed once the
pilot project is completed.
In other words, a pilot project
always represents a journey into
the unknown.
In their comprehensive presen-
tations to council, Mr. Dutot and
Dr. Stan Spacek clearly expressed
valid concerns about the possible
contamination of the water table,
with inherent risks to the well
water of residents on Mill Road.
Furthermore, they also expressed
concerns about the exhausted air to
the atmosphere from the energy
regeneration process.
Recurrent injection of compressed
air into salt caverns could readily
become contaminated with moulds
and bacteria lurking in the sediment
or on the walls of the caverns.
This pressurised, contaminated
air could then track into the water
table and contaminate well water,
as well as contaminating the
atmosphere as it is exhausted.
Accordingly, from a public health
Happy to welcome spring
Dear Editor,
After some rollercoaster weather
in the past few months, Goderich
Communities in Bloom is so happy
to be able to welcome spring.
We held our spring meeting on
April 11 and welcomed 3 new
members.
We will again this year be cele-
brating gardens in our town
through two initiatives, one
organized by our local committee
and the second one through Scotts
Miracle Gro.
If you have been a past recipient
of a Pay It Forward Outstanding
garden sign and it is in your shed,
basement or garage, please dust it
off and pass it on.
The Town of Goderich and Com-
munities in Bloom have entered the
National Competition again this year.
perspective, I believe that any fur-
ther development of the site plan
should be contingent on the follow-
ing: That appropriate baseline test-
ing of the well water of those house-
holds most likely to have their well
water contaminated be carried out
by an independent agency approved
by council, and that this testing be
continued throughout the pilot pro-
ject at appropriate intervals; That
ongoing testing of the exhausted air
be mandatory on an ongoing basis,
as determined by public health
guidelines, during the pilot project,
should it proceed.
Having monitored the process of
council on this issue over the past
several weeks, I'sensed that coun-
cil has been pressured by the
town's administrative team into
making a decision before all valid
concerns were fully explored.
Accordingly, I urge council to
take a second look at this impor-
tant issue. An experimental, pilot
project needs to be further
assessed before any construction
We are in the "Canada 150" cate-
gory and will welcome our judges
on July 20, 21 and 22.
In keeping with our country's
birthday celebration, we have
incorporated reds and whites in
many of our garden, planter and
basket designs.
We would encourage all Goderich
gardeners to also add a splash or red
and white to their beds and baskets.
begins.
'Ihe citizens of Goderich and
surrounding area deserved more
time to hear of the health and
environmental risks inherent in
this experimental, pilot project.
Citizens also need to be
informed that in a recorded vote at
the council meeting on May 8,
three elected officials voted against
NRStor's project at this stage,
whilst four elected officials voted
for it to proceed.
Furthermore, hundreds of citi-
zens signed a petition expressing
their health and environmental
concerns about NTStor's proposal,
many attended council meetings
and several wrote letters of con-
cern to council.
This is not a crisis that our com-
munity is facing but, accordingly, I
believe that further evaluation is
essential before the wisest and saf-
est decision can be made.
Respectfully,
Jim Hollingworth, M.D., F.C.F..P,
Goderich
