HomeMy WebLinkAboutGoderich Signal Star, 2017-05-24, Page 3Wednesday, May 24, 2017 • Signal Star 3 25th Celtic Roots Festival celebrates Canada coast to coast In 2017, the Goderich Celtic Roots Festival turns 25 - and is celebrating Canada from coast to coast to coast as part of the Canada 150 cel- ebrations across the nation at the Celtic Roots Festival, Celtic College, and Celtic Kids Day Camp. The Celtic Roots Festival prides itself on presenting the very best of folk, Celtic, roots, and acoustic music from around the world with a focus on performance as well as education through the Celtic College and Kids Day Camp offerings. "Our 25th celebration lin- ing up with Canada's sesquicentennial meant we just had to celebrate the amazing music connected to folk traditions to be found all across Canada," says Kate Johnston, Artistic Director. The Canadian talent that will be performing at the Celtic Roots Festival includes multiple Juno, East Contributed photos Kathleen Ivaluarjuk Merritt, an Inuit throat singer and folk singer, will be performing at the festival. Coast Music Award, and Canadian Folk Music Award winners such as: songwriter Rose Cousins (PEI); the new father -son duo celebrating their folk roots with political leanings Bill & Joel Plaskett (NS); powerful heir of a tra- ditional singing family Mat- thew Byrne (NFLD); the incredible next step in the Leahy fiddle and step dance family Next Generation Leahy (ON); the transna- .tional traditional ensemble 3T1R (Ireland/ON/BC); the proudly rooted four -sibling ensemble Metis Fiddler Quartet (MB); the latest exponents of the hot Quebe- cois folk -pop music scene, Les Poules a Colin (QC); for the first time ever, the Celtic Roots Festival will feature an artist from the North in IVA (NU), a new ensemble fea- turing Inuit throat singer and folk singer Kathleen Ivaluar- juk Merritt. Fans of Celtic and folk music from abroad will still find plenty to enjoy as well, with featured performances from The Young'Uns (UK), an award-winning trio of "pitch perfect harmonies and rapid fire humour" Irish uilleann piper Martin Nolan (Ireland), concertina and Irish pipe duo Caroline Keane & Tom Delany (Ireland) and the Arrowsmith:Robb Trio (UK). 'Pickets for the Celtic Roots Festival are now on sale at wW'w.celticfestival.ca. Weekend passes are on sale at the advanced rate until July 31: S70 for adults and $65 for seniors (65+) and youth (18 and under). Day passes are available for Friday ($30 adult/$25 senior or youth), Saturday (S35 adult/$30 senior or youth), and Sunday ($25 adult/$20 senior or youth). Children 12 and under are always free.
