The Spring edition of the
Sound of Goderich
delighted its audience on
Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at
Trinity Christian Rcfornied
Church.
It was an evening of
music, with a decidedly
Canadian bent. The three
main groups, the Goder-
ich Laketown Band, the
MacKay Choristers and
the Goderich Harbourai-
res Men's Choir, each per-
formed and were joined
by their guests for this
concert, the Suncoast
Brass.
An enthusiastic audi-
ence of close to 200 people
enjoyed a wide variety of
musical styles, performed
by these four groups.
The Goderich Laketown
Band, celebrating its 50th
Anniversary, is conducted
by Hugh McGregor, and by
Assistant Conductor Katie
Dockstader.
The Band, made up of
approximately 40 talented
instrumentalists, opened

lowed by a somber "Escape

The band later closed the
concert with three•more
pieces. One of these was
commissioned by the
Goderich Rotary Club for
the Laketown Band, "Snug
Harbour': It was written by
a local musician from Hen-
sall, Jeff Smallman.
The MacKay Choristers,
under the direction of
Linda Street, and accompa-
nied on piano by Deborah
Bailey, performed five
numbers, each with a
Canadian connection.
They began their set with
A Small Child, composed
by Robert B.. Anderson,
son-in-law of the Choris-
ters' founding director, Irla
Stewart.
They also included a tale,
sung in French, of a ban-
ished young rebel, "Un
Canadien Errant" which
opened with a beautiful
solo by tenor, Roy Price.
The Choristers concluded
their set by wowing their
audience with "We Rise
Again" featuring their
. director, Linda Street, as
the soloist.
The Suncoast Brass quar-
tetthen took the stage and
thrilled the audience with
five selections, and their vir-
tuosity was well in
evidence.
Al Mullin, fascinated all
during St. Louis Blues with
the wa-wa effect with the
trumpet plunger mute.
Their performance of
"Blue Rondo a la Turk" was
both amazing to hear and
to see. The timing on this
piece was extremely intri-
cate and the audience
loved it.
The Goderich Har-
bouraires Men's Choir,
with Director,. Elizabeth
Tolchard, and accompanist
Cedric Abday, presented
an interesting selection,
which included a short,
moving composition with
guitar and drum accompa-
niment, called "Skidegate
Love Song", sung in the
Haida language.
They closed their group
with Blue Rodeo's "Head
Over Heels", with guitar
accompaniment by Steve
Dawe. The Harbouraires
are celebrating their 70th
Anniversary this year, and
special recognition was
given to Dave Medley,
who has sung with this
choir ever since its
inception.
The groups have been
presenting Spring and Fall
concerts for a number of
years, and have perfected
smooth transitions
between groups.
This year the transitions
were made interesting by
piano music performed by
Louise Dockstader, Debo-
rah Bailey and Cedric
Abday.
Each of these groups is
made up of members who
hail from Goderich and
surrounding area, includ-
ing, but not limited to,
Bayfield, Clinton, Seaforth,
and as far afield as Strat-
ford. They are always look-
ing for new members of
any age. See page 21 for
photos.
