CIBC donation to St. Joseph's Kingsbridge Community

The closure of a local church in
2012 left a vibrant, rural commu-
nity without a venue to meet.
The St. Joseph's Kingsbridge
Community was established and
purchased the former church, in
order to restore the building for
community gatherings, perfor-
mance opportunities and rental
options.
The renamed Kingsbridge Centre
opened in 2015, after the Kings-
bridge Community gained posses-
sion of the buildings and with a
$95, 000 budget in private funds
and 296 volunteers, the community
had a venue again.
The former church, repurposed
as multi -use community facility
continues to be renovated, funds
permitting, using a five-year cam-
paign from 2015-2019.
Phase One of renovations saw
the completion of the upstairs,
which is open to public, while
downstairs of the building is
being renovated in stages. Phase
Two, accessible washrooms and
Phase Three, windows, paint,
plasterwork and flooring, are
scheduled for completion
between spring of 2017 and late
2018.
The downstairs of the Kings-
bridge Centre will see a replace-
ment in the furnace and storage
rooms, the main hall will be reno-
vated, kitchen and washrooms
scheduled for January 2018 and
accessible lift paid by grants,
scheduled for 2019.
In 2015, Kingsbridge Centre
became home to concert series,
community gatherings, prayer ser-
vices, community BBQs, seasonal
events and a gallery for local
artists.
Currettly, the volunteers are
renovating the basement into a
community -learning centre that
will offer computer training for
seniors, parenting classes, rural
education, summer programs for
youth and several other
programs.
Although volunteerism and mul-
tigenerational programming are
the current primary activities, 2017
events will also include an Ontario
150 series of theatre, music and
community events.
There is no other public build-
ing in the area, and the impor-
tance and impact of this venue
promotes inclusion and a sense
of community; the shared goal
and vision for the Kingsbridge
Community Centre has revital-
ized the area.
The project encourages public
participation, perhaps through vol-
unteerism, and community
engagement with the several pro-
grams and events hosted at the
Centre.
In a cheque presentation at
Goderich CIBC branch last week,
Banking Centre Leader, Teri Ladd
and her colleagues donated $5, 000
to the Kingsbridge Community
Centre.
The donation of $5, 000 was not
only to support the local commu-
nity, but to give back to a commu-
nity that CIBC Goderich has been a
part of for 120 years.
Kingsbridge Community is host
to six events this year, to celebrate
Canada's birthday and Ontario's
rich heritage. The first event was
held on April 27, where jazz bands
from GDCI and St. Anne's CSS per-
formed a musical salute to
Canada.
Upcoming events hosted at
Kingsbridge: June 15,16,17, 18, an
original theatre production
depicting life in rural Ontario in
the 1950s; the Canada 150 Gala on
July 21, to celebrate Canada's birth
and will feature Canadian music,
artwork and prose; Embracing
Canada's 150th, area churches
unite for an ecumenical prayer
service, followed by a BBQ and
