Family Fun Night at St. Mary's School

To celebrate Canada's 150th anniver-
sary of Confederation and to raise
funds for the construction of a natural
playground, St. Mary's School hosted a
Family Fun Night last Friday.
The future natural playground is part of
a campaign to promote a healthy environ-
ment and to promote playing outside.
Mary Lynn Weaver, a member of the
parent council and visionary for the even-
ing, superbly decorated the school.
An evening organized by many mem-
bers of parent council and staff, provided
authentic Canadian visual displays that also
offered informational 'did you know' cards.
"We really tried to make it educational,
and tried to make it feel as authentic Cana-
dian as we could," explained Weaver.
The main office was converted into a
trading post, with beaver pellets hanging
on drying racks, surrounded by Hudson
Bay items and canoe paddles.
Around the halls were displays to repre-
sent Canadian history and culture, from
Canadian geese and Tee -Pees to Totem
Poles decorated by the students and Cana-
dian -themed artwork colouring the walls.
In order to raise funds for a natural
playground, there was an online auction
that has raised just over $4, 500, and a
raffle for gift baskets of varying themes.
There was also a baked -goods silent auc-
tion, and a silent auction for two hand-
made quilts by Bonnie Pollack.
According to Principal Hagarty, a young
girl excitedly exclaimed to her that the
evening was "the best night of my life"
The evening offered entertainment
and games in the gymnasium, as well
as pizza and poutine for purchase.
Honourable George Brophy led those
in attendance in a citizenship celebra-
tion ceremony to conclude the evening.
"I was very happy to be asked to be
involved tonight. If we think about it,
most people when becoming a Canadian
citizen, means a dream come true, but it
also means they assume the rights and
responsibilities as all Canadians," stated
Brophy to the crowded gymnasium. .
"The right to leave and enter Canada
freely, the right to vote, the right to educa-
tion. The rights also come with responsi-
bility - to help others in the community,
to follow the laws, to respect others. We
live in one of the best countries in the
world, so tonight let's celebrate."
The Family Fun Night evening con-
cluded with a prayer and by celebrating
our great nation by singing '0 Canada'
together.
