The My Great Lake, My Future
Conference hosted last week at
Point Farms Provincial Park was
a great success.
The Conference saw a total
of 110 participating students
from five difference second-
ary schools such as GDCI,
Central Iluron Secondary
School in Clinton, Listowel
District Secondary School, St.
Anne's Catholic Secondary
School in Clinton and St.
Michaels Secondary School
in Stratford.
Providing students with edu-
cational information on the
important environmental and
economic role that Lake Huron
plays in our area, the Confer-
ence also offered possible career
information.
There Conference also offered .
presentations and a career
panel that highlighted a variety
of employment opportunities
that relate to the Great Lakes
including: the Canadian Coast
Guard, the Huron County
Health Unit, the tourism sector,
marine training and research at
Georgian College and environ-
mental monitoring.
The afternoon session was
hosted at Point Farms Provincial
Park, and that aspect of the Con-
ference focused on hand -on
activities for the students.
Some of those activities
included: using a spade to dig
out phragmites from a dunes
area, led by Rhiannon Moore
from the Lake Huron Centre
for Coastal Conservation; col-
lecting lake water samples, led
by Mike Park of the Huron
County Health Unit; investi-
gating ways to reduce run off
from agricultural land so soil
and nutrients do not make
their way to the lake, led by
Mat Shelter, a Watershed Mon-
itoring Technician at the
Maitland Conservation;
observing and collecting micro
plastic beads and investigating
the impact of plastics in Lake
Huron, led by Jennifer Pate
from Love Your Greats; observ-
ing and holding native species
of snakes and turtles, led by
staff from the Scales Nature
Park.
"We sometimes take Lake
Huron for granted. "I he My Great
Lake, My Future conference
gave students an opportunity to
investigate the importance of
the lake to our local economy
and some of the environmental
issues facing our amazing shore-
line ecosystem," stated Jayne
Thompson, Communications
Coordinator of Maitland
Conservation.
The Ontario Ministry of the
Environment and Climate
Change funded the My Great
Lake, My Future Conference,
hosted by the Maitland
Conservation.
