The Goderich Onlnsurance Flyers look ahead to the 2017-2018 season Richard Madge Special to the Signal Star While two teams, the Ayr Centennials and the Port Hope Panthers, play in the Schmalz Cup final series to determine the Provincial Junior Hockey League champions for 2017, the Goderich Orr Insurance Flyers, like all the other sixty -some Junior "C" hockey teams in Ontario have to look ahead to the 2017-18 season. The Flyers have already held two April rookie camp skates in the quest for new players. The camp attracted over 40 players from a wide range of area minor hockey systems in what team General Manager Dan Kerr described as the GDCI Vikings soccer results Kathleen Smith Goderich Signal Star Last week, both the Sen- ior Girls and Senior Boys soccer teams played in two matches, one against Strat- ford Central and another against host team South Huron D.H.S. The Senior Boys team fell 3-0 against home team South Huron, but managed to leave the pitch with a 1-0 win over Stratford Central. Goal -keeper Greg Morning- star came away with a shutout. The Senior Vikings find themselves in fifth place, with 6 points. They trail behind St. Anne (6 points), Stratford Central (6 points), South Huron (9 points) and in first place, St. Michael (12 points). Last week, the Senior Girls Vikings continued their winning streak, by defeating South Huron 5-0, with goals going to Doherty, B. Lewis, Noel, Reitsma and Lang. The Senior Girls also managed to defeat Stratford Central 2-1, seeing goals contrib- uted by Squire and Bowman. most talented pre -season group he has seen in his ten- ure with the Flyers. On Wednesday, May 10, at 7:30 pm, the Flyers will be stag- ing a prospects exhibition game at the Maitland Recreation Centre and the main camp for the Flyers starts on Saturday, August 12 at 1 pm at the MRC. To put the cap on the The Senior Girls are cur- rently in first place, with 12 points, with a trailing St. Michael team with one less game and 9 points. For the next two matches, the Senior Boys and Senior Girls Vikings will compete against St. Anne and St. Michael soc- cer teams. The Junior Boys and Girls soccer teams unfortunately are not having a similar start to their season. The Junior Boys played on Friday, April 28 at home against St. Michael and were defeated 5-0. 2016-17 season, the Flyers held their end of the year banquet on April 22. The banquet featured the presentation of awards for last season. The Most Valua- ble Player Award went to goaltender Nate Watson. The Top Defenceman Award went to Brad Watson. In a slightly higher posi- tion than the boys, the Jun- ior Girls find their position at third from last. The Junior Girls also com- peted on Friday, April 28, tying Mitchell 0-0. The Junior Boys and Junior Girls soccer teams compete at home on Thursday May 4 against Central Huron and F.E. Madill next. goals and 18 assists in 32 games, was the top scorer. The Most Sportsmanlike Award went to forward Jack Francis, while the Leader- ship Award, as chosen by the last year players, went to Riley Connors. The Rookie of the Year award went to Goderich native, defenceman Trent Buchanan. Booster Club Service Awards went to trainer Les Phillips and Bob Kuno.
