"We are very honoured to be donating to our local Veterans," explained Heather Ball, the Pro- ject Coordinator for the project. The project is successful due to the volunteers in the community . - some attend weekly Monday evening meetings at the Lutheran Church in Goderich, where knit- ting hats and mittens and weaving the sleeping mats takes place. Others ways that people in the community have volunteered have been through donating yarn to the cause, donating plas- tic milk bags to the cause or M Photos by Kathleen Smith/Goderich Signal Star 'Hats and Mats' volunteer group donated 35 sleeping mats, 75 knitted hats, 65 pairs of knitted mitts, 14 sets of attached hats and mitts, 18 scarves and 41 pairs of socks. All donations to the Goderich Legion are to be distributed to the homeless Veterans in Ontario. ats' Donation donating homemade knitted hats, mitts or scarves. "Anyone in the community is doing the knitting. It's other peo- ple too, not just our group. They show up and offer knitted mitts for the donation," explained Ball. "It is truly a community project that is happening here." According to Ball, its takes over 130 milk bags and six hours to make one sleeping mat. The recycled milk bags are cut into strips, looped together and then woven into a sleeping mat. These unique mats made of recycled plastic also have an aspect of being waterproof for the homeless Veterans who receive these donations. "On behalf of Branch 109 and the Ontario Command, I would like to thank you and your group for presenting us with that dona- tion. I know it will be put to good use throughout the province of Ontario," said Dennis Schmidt, President of the Goderich Legion. Schmidt will soon take this particular donation from the 'Hats and Mats' program to the Provincial Command in Aurora. The donated hats, mittens, sleeping mats and scarves will then be distributed to the home- less Veterans in Ontario. The program also donates to the Unity Project in London, which is a homeless centre that regularly sees approximately 50 male and females spend the night. In addition, the 'Hats and Mats' volunteer group is also responsible for leaving hats the past two winters, on posts around Courthouse Square and the restaurants, for the homeless to take and use during the cold months. "When I started this Monday night project when I retired after 30 years of teaching, I needed a purpose. Feeling that part of my purpose is to help others, now other people have taken this purpose to their heart as well," explained Ball. "Others are pro- ducing out of the generosity of their heart, to give to those who are less fortunate than ourselves." If interested in getting involved, volunteering, helping with the program or donating to such a cause, contact Heather Ball at 519 - 524 - 7876.
