mportance of the
arts in our schools
GDCI to host students from all over the
school board for a special day dedicated
to the importance of the arts
"The arts matter because without
them our strong emotions, our vital
voices, our moue -to -the -groove
energy and necessary empathy and
life -affirming connectedness and
tendency toward complexity might
all wither from disuse, maybe even
destroy us through misuse. The arts
matter because, with them, we mat-
ter."- Amy Stolls
In a world gone mad, the arts
matter more than ever.
Art illuminates and analyzes the
human condition, art opens us up
to new ideas, and on an emotional
level, art - from pop songs to poetry
- can keep us company when we're
down, inspire us to do better.
Art is beauty.
Research indicates that experi-
encing and learning through art is
powerful and life affirming, not only
in school but also throughout life.
On Friday, April 28 Rick Sickinger,
Huron County's Cultural Develop-
ment Officer, Gil Garratt, Artistic
Director of Blyth Festival and Eliza-
heth Van den Broeck from Elizaheth's
Art Gallery will discuss the impor-
tance of the arts in our lives in a key-
note address to students from across
the Avon Maitland School Board at
Goderich Collegiate Institute.
Students will spend the day creat-
ing art with educators and local art-
ists who hope to challenge their per-
ceptions and encourage them to
explore their artistic sides through a
series of workshops at Goderich Col-
legiate Institute and FauxPop
Station.
The Sound of Goderich
The spring version of Sound of
Goderich gets underway at 7:30
p.m., Tuesday, May 9 in Trinity
Christian Reformed Church, 245
Mill Road, Goderich.
This concert of seasonal choral
and instrumental music will fea-
ture the MacKay Choristers,
Goderich Harbouraires Men's
Choir, Goderich Laketown Band
and special guests the Suncoast
Brass Quartet.
The Sound of Goderich concerts
are organized by the three main
groups of musicians usually twice a
year, to showcase the musical tal-
ents of Goderich and area musi-
cians. Fortunately there are several
venues, usually churches, which
can accommodate the large per-
forming groups and audiences.
The MacKay Choristers is a
mixed community choir for people
55 + years of age who love to sing.
Linda Street, the current
director since 2006, is carrying on
in the tradition started by her
aunt, Irla Stewart, who was the
first director from 1983 to 1999.
Starting with 16 members the
choir expanded over the years to
about 70 members in the mid
2000's. Current membership
includes 16 sopranos, 13 altos,
seven tenors and four basses.
Deborah Bailey accompanies the
choir on piano.
The Choristers also perform at
local retirement and nursing
homes for the enjoyment of resi-
dents and at community events.
Practices are held on Thursday
mornings at the MacKay Centre,
Nelson Street, Goderich. Check
out the website at http://www.
mackaychoristers.ca
The Choristers are celebrating
their 34th season and welcome
new members, especially men.
No auditions - just come and sing.
