Huron Out of the Cold Project

Goderich Signal Star
This winter was the inaugu-
ral season for the Huron Out
of the Cold project, which
invited those seeking shelter
during the winter months to
find a place that wasp warm
and welcoming to rest.
Kate Ballagh-Steeper, Min-
ister of Family and Justice
Ministries at Lakeshore
United Church, opened the
doors to the Church for the
homeless or simply those
who a struggling and need a
safe and warm place to sleep.
"We didn't open our doors
until January 20 and it was
actually quite a warm winter.
I think it went better than we
expected," said Ballagh-
Steeper. "There were six
unique individuals who
stayed in the shelter. That
doesn't sound like a lot of
people but considering we
were only open for 10 weeks,
and it was growing - We have
had calls since we have
closed. It takes a while for
information to filter down to
the population of who is
going to use it."
The Out of the Cold pro-
ject saw men seek shelter
during those 10 weeks,
ranging in age from 21 to 67.
Many of these visitors to the
Church were not just staying
for one night, but instead
several nights. The men stay-
ing in the shelter had the
time to connect with out-
reach staff, or the Salvation
Army, in order to use the
support to find more perma-
nent housing.
"Everybody was grateful
that they didn't have to go to
a city. Often people are
struggling with mental ill-
ness, or a variety of things.
Everybody that used the
shelter were clear that they
wanted to be here in this
County," explained
Ballagh-Steeper.
According to Minister Bal-
lagh-Steeper, a large aspect
to the great success of the
10 -week project, was due to
the volunteers. Whether the
project would attract volun-
teers or not was a big ques-
tion before the project
began.
"We had over 30 active
volunteers. The community
really responded. We had
people from the churches
but also people from the
communities such as Goder-
ich, Clinton, Blyth and Sea -
forth," said Bellagh-Steeper.
"It was really representative
of the whole County."
This pilot project was the
first and only men's shelter
in I Iuron County, and after
the success of providing
shelter to those in need and
the success of members in
the community volunteering
to make a difference for
those less fortunate, it is
likely the project will.con-
tinue. Minister Bellagh-
Steeper and other project
organizers are looking to
open the doors to those in
need of shelter again during
the winter months.
"We are working on some
different space that we can
open at 7am and be in the
same space, rather than hav-
ing to move from two places
like we did this year, so stay
tuned," explained
Bellagh-Steeper.
The project did not use
any fundraising events to
fund for supplies, such as
mattresses, but rather had
great partnerships with
organizations and compa-
nies within the community.
The Huron Out of the Cold
project was designed to be
temporary during the winter
months only, and those who
stayed at the shelter were

welcome to stay as long as
they needed, but were
"encouraged to make con-
nections with the outreach
worker, but it wasn't neces-
sary," explained
Rellagh-Steeper.
"I'he first-time men's shel-
ter not only provided a warm
bed and refuge. from the
cold, but also offered ser-
vices for those staying, to
provide assistance in order
to get on their feet and find
more permanent
arrangements.
Minister Kate Bellagh-
Steeper and other Huron out
of the Cold organizers and
volunteers are looking to do
the project again next year.
