Goderich Signal Star
The name Hunter Costello
is one that lays heavy in the
hearts of the community of
Goderich, and even more so,
for the Costello family.
Diagnosed in 2014 at the
young age of 8 months old,
Hunter battled for two and a
half years with Acute Lymph-
oblastic Leukemia (A.L.L.).
Despite his battle, accord-
ing to his mother, hunter
was a happy kid, always
smiling, kind and gentle with
H
a genuine curiousity to
learn.
Unfortunately, Hunter's
battle and his journey came
to a devastating end when
Hunter passed away on Feb-
ruary 26, 2017.
During Hunter's struggle
with infant A.L.L. his parents
Catherine and Kenny Cos-
tello were by his side every
step of the way.
This meant taking time off
work, and the Costello's are
forever grateful for all the
support they received.
The Ronald McDonald
House in London was a mas-
sive instrument to assist the
Costello's during that turbu-
lent time, but they also felt
love by the family -like way
the community of Goderich
unter Costello
banded together to provide
financial and emotional
support.
"The first time we were
away for eight months
straight. Then, after we did
come home, Hunter
relapsed, and we were there
[at the Ronald McDonald
House] for another three
months," explained Cathe-
rine. "Ronald McDonald
House was so good to us."
What the Costello's experi-
enced with Hunter is every
parent's nightmare, but
Catherine and Kenny are
able to understand that part
of Hunter's legacy was con-
necting so many people;
members of the community
as well as other families
experiencing similar battles.
The Costello's now want to
pay it forward for other fami-
lies who are going through
similar experiences.
A newly created founda-
tion, the Hunter Costello
Memorial Foundation is a
means to provide financial
support to families in the
community who have chil-
dren who are experiencing a
difficult health situation.
"We know firsthand that the
expenses can add up, and
want to help take the burden
off our local families with sick
kids," said Catherine. "Hunter
had infant A.L.L. but it is
important to us that we help
any child with a life threaten-
ing illness."
