Re Gripping Your Golf Clubs
Ashley Gravett
Special to the Goderich Signal
Star
Never thought about get-
ting your clubs re -gripped?
Here's why you should
reconsider:
Grips are made of materials
that age and wear as a function
of time. Ozone, heat, dirt, and
oils from your hands all age
your grips and cause the natu-
ral degradation of the grip.
The traction that a fresh grip
provides lets you hold the club
lightly without worrying about
losing the club during your
swing. In this relaxed state it will
help promote proper swing
mechanics and wrist action.
While a worn grip causes
you to grasp the club tighter,
causing arm and wrist ten-
sion that inhibits proper
swing mechanics.
You know at the start of the
season when you haven't held
a golf club in a really long time
and your first couple rounds
out your forearms really hurt?
Well there are two major
reasons: you're gripping too
tightly and your grips are
most likely worn out.
I know purchasing a new set
of golf clubs for a new golfer is
not always in the budget and
there's nothing wrong with that.
What you should look for
is clubs that are weighted
appropriately for your build.
You next step is to re -grip
them because chances are
the clubs you just bought
that are. used have never
been re -gripped.
Fifteen years ago all grips
were very standard and had
no variety: Nov there are so
many styles and thickness of
grips to consider. A lot of my •
clients who take golf lessons
suffer from arthritis.
There are grips that are
larger that make holding on
to the golf club alot easier
with next to no pain.
How often should I get
my clubs re -gripped?
My reps tell me that golf-
•ers should get clubs re -
gripped once every year or
every 40 rounds. Regardless
of how often you play, ozone,
heat, dirt and oils are con-
stantly at work breaking
down the materials that
make up your grips. .
We all know the importance
of wearing sunscreen but be
sure to wash your hands after a
as sunscreen breaks down your
rips at a quicker speed.
Can fresh grips really
improve my game?
I would love to say that yes
you will see immediate
results. They can't overcome
a bad swing, or poor align-
ment, or any of the other
faults that golfers have but
they can help you approach
your potential as a golfer.
The Golf Pride Company has
a national survey out that golf-
ers showed that 66% of those
who had clubs re -gripped
showed an average drop of
three to four strokes per round!
How can I make grips last
longer?
Golf grips get a great deal
of physical abuse. They are
handled round after round,
swing after swing - often
tune's season after season.
Grips are meant to last, but
they are not made of steel.
They are made of much
softer materials developed spe-
cifically to feel resilient and
tacky. If you are out playing and
it rainsbe sure to take them out
of your golf bag and let them

dry overnight to help prolong
the life of your grips.
Be sure to do regular clean-
ing on your grips to remove
any residue that would break-
down
reakdown the grips. Most grips
can be cleaned with a mild
dishwashing detergent.
Huron Heat skates to success in Inaugural Season

The inaugural 'season for
the Huron Heat Female
Hockey Association has just
wrapped up and to call it a
simple success would be an
understatement.
The overwhelming degree
of success experienced is
largely due to the commit-
ment of so many community
volunteers.
Thank you to each and
every individual who helped
bring this association.
together and put 144 female
athletes on the ice. Our gen-
erous community is also to
thank for many sponsor-
ships. We couldn't do it
without everyone pulling in
the same direction.
We are proud tohave
many teams with highly
successful seasons. Success
comes in a variety of forms
and to see all our players
develop skill, love for the
game and positive charac-
ter traits is just as impor-
tant as the result on the
scoreboard at the end of
each game.
At the Fundamentals level,
improvement was evident

week to week with these girls
and we are so excited to see
many of these athletes
returning to the Heat next
season to compete.
Our Novice HL team was
an energetic bunch and the
disco dance parties in the
dressing room pumped
them up for every game. This
team finished off their sea-
son with two silver
performances.
Novice B was truly 'heat-
ing it up' all season long,
qualifying for Provincials,
winning their Lower Lakes
Female Hockey League
(LLFHL) division and going
on to earn the prestigious
title of LLFHL Champion at
Tournament of
Champions.
Our Atom C team had an
uphill climb all season but
never gave up and learned
the value of perseverance
when they earned Western
Ontario Girls Hockey League
(WOGHL) Gold.
The Atom B girls were on
fire both on and off the ice
and trained hard with shoot-
ing challenges from coach-
ing staff, cross -fit training
and practice. Finalists in
league playoffs and a strong
showing at Provincials were
highlights for this team.
Peewee C's brought
together a bunch of fabulous
girls and staff who battled
hard all season long and
captured Gold at an invita-
tional tournament which
sent them into playoff sea-
son on a high.
Just narrowly missing Pro-
vincial qualification, this
team still finished strong as
Finalists in WOGHL Cham-
pionships. Our Peewee BB
team worked hard on and off
ice, playing some tough
competition in this division
all year. These girls advanced
as far as round two in league
playoffs and beat Huron -
Perth rivals to advance to
Provincials.
The Bantam BB team had
a phenomenal season both
in tournament play and reg-
ular season games. Champi-
onship. Weekend brought a
4th place finish in all of
LLFHL and of course the
absolute highlight being
their stellar performance at
Provincials where they went
6-0 in some gritty games to
earn the title of All Ontario
Champions.
Congratulations to our
Midget C team who played
many amazing games
together and competed well
in regular season, tourna-
ment play and in playoff sea-
son, missing Provincial qual-
ification by the narrowest of
margins.
Our Midget B were
extremely successful both
in regular season and tour-
nament play, earning both
silver and gold. We are for-
tunate to have these leaders
from the midget teams in
our organization who show
our younger athletes that
hockey is a game to be
played alf through the
years.
We look forward to our
spring team selection pro-
cess and welcome girls of all
ages and all skill levels to
come join this momentum -
filled organization where
fun, friendships and a love
for Canada's game are
always growing.
