Julie Talbot Special to the Goderich Signal Star If you are a living breath- ing human being, then at some point in your life you will have had experiences of stress. Often times, we are stressed and don't recog.- .nize it as such because it has become our "normal" way of being. We tend to lie to ourselves all the time by saying "no big deal" or "suck it up" in stressful situations and then we press forward. Well, our bodies never lie and at some point, if we do not acknowledge our stress level then we will eventually get sick or injured. Why is this? Because stress is not all in our heads -it's a physio- logical response of the body! Our life-styles and society as a whole, have drastically changed over the past two centuries, however our bod- ies have notchanged in thousands of years. There are many research studies, which demonstrate that our physiology cannot keep up to the rapidly changing pace of technology and that we are all chroni- cally stressed as a result. In considering the grow- ing numbers of individuals living with stress related ill- nesses and chronic disease in Western society, this con- cept is not hard to imagine. How many times in a day do you answer your phone or text? How often are you checking Facebook? Are you still of the thought that "multi -tasking" is the only way of being productive? We seem to have turned into a society of instant grati- fication and we have condi- tioned ourselves to be "on- call 24/7" These activities, in excess, can be damaging to our health. Wednesday, April 19, 2017 • Signal Star 13 Stress is a physiological response in the body. When we experience sometping as stressful the sympathetic (fight or flight) part of our nervous system responds by sending cortisol and adrena- line into our blood stream so we are ready to fight or run away from that "sabre- toothed tiger': 1-iowever, most of the stress We experience today is perceived stress and not life or death situations (hopefully). What I mean by per- ceived stress is about how we think about a situation that makes us feel stressed and if we are not able to do anything about relieving that stress then the body holds onto it. When we don't have the opportunity to "fight or flight',' these hormones stay in our bodies and accumu- late over time—this is called chronic stress.
