Prohibition Exhibit at
Huron County Museum
Kathleen Smith
Goderich Signal Star
The 1 iuron County Museum
on North Street in Goderich will
be officially opening its doors to
a new exhibit on the topic of
Prohibition in the County.
A grand opening date of May 18,
which is International Museum
Day, the exhibit will run until Sep-
tember 24, when the space will
then be open to local artists for the
Huron County Art Show.
"We try to keep this space occu-
pied and filled with an exhibit
during the busy season, and if you
come between May and the end
of October, you can buy a joint
admission and go see the Goder-
ich Jail as well," said Huron
County Museum Senior Curator
Elizabeth French -Gibson.
The building itself belongs to
the community history of
Huron County, and the
Museum strives to touch on a
lot of different stories that
affected the whole of Huron
County, from fashion exhibits to
historical content exhibits.
"For this exhibit, we wanted to
do something that is very Huron
County based, and something
that hasn't been told too much.
Huron County has a wide variety
of how they tackled this issue,"
explained French -Gibson.
For those planning on explor-
ing the Museum and the Prohi-
bition Exhibit, visitors can
expect to see a collection of arte-
facts of liquor bottles as well as a
large case display of artefacts on
loan from a local collector, and
pieces from an archaeology dig
in Egmondville.
"Huron County has a long
history with the topic of prohi-
bition," said French -Gibson.
The Huron County voted out at
1959, but the battle of prohibi-
tion began in 1884.
From research on the County
during those years, the local
options, the Canada Temper-
ance Act, and the Ontario Liq-
uor Act, the Huron County
Museum was able to create an
informational exhibit.
French -Gibson explained the
Museum's endeavour to tell sto-
ries for people in the County.
"We want people from the
County to come and learn from
the exhibit, but we also want to
educate all the tourists who
come through .as well. A lot of
our audience in the bus months
are from people who aren't from
this community. We are trying to

show people what happened
throughout the historyof prohi-
bition and some of the debate
and argument that went along
with it, said French -Gibson.
There will also be activities
that go along with the prohibi-
tion exhibit, including a Tem-
perance themed picnic in July,
outside (weather permitting) of
the Museum.
The exhibits that rotate
through Huron County
Museum add a new element to
the history of the County and
the community. The exhibits
give people another reason to
come back to the Museum.
Senior Curator Elizabeth
French -Gibson is currently work-
ing
orking on a three -year -out schedule,
and is now planning for 2020.
Members of the local com-
munity and Huron County can
look forward to an exhibit on
agriculture next year, and an
exhibit on the Lakeshore of
I luron County in 2019.

seum.ca for details on hours
