The Autism Ontario flag was raised alongside the Goderich flag, with attend- ance by Mayor Kevin Morri- son and several other coun- cil members. "I think it's great recogni- tion and important to raise awareness. We have an employee within our busi- ness with autism. Ile is a wonderful teammate, very dedicated and focused. It's great to see the recognition for members of our commu- nity that we are providing here in the Town of Goder- ich," Mayor Morrison stated. The Co -Presidents of the Huron -Perth Chapter of Autism Ontario, Patrick Ryan and Katie Brindley -Ryan, brought their two children to the flag raising ceremony, Kimble Ryan and Xander Ryan, who is on the spectrum. Being able to find the help and to become better equipped and having a better understand- ing is due to the support of the community" Statistically, one in 94 chil- dren are diagnosed with autism. It is something that society is seeing more of, and there is a need for understanding, or how to act and behave around some- one who is autistic. Katie Ryan explained, "People need to be more aware, more understanding and accept that we might not all be or have a neuro -typical child but that diversity is not a scary or bad word." The Huron -Perth Chapter of Autism Ontario raise funding through the many events they organize throughout the community and surrounding areas. A fundraising walk along the boardwalk of the beach in Goderich on June 25 is one event for the community to mark onto their calendars, in support of Autism Ontario. - "Usually in Goderich, there is a barbecue that brings awareness and dona- tions. The money collected goes towards one-to-one funding, respite care fund- ing, tech support funding, cheaper stays at hotels and anything that surrounds the care of a child with autism," said Co -President, Patrick Ryan. • The Autism Ontario chap- ter in Huron -Perth is on a volunteer basis, where there is a lot of one-to-one sup- port, and all proceeds made from fundraising events in Patrick Ryan and Katie Brindley -Ryan with their children Kimble and Xander Ryan at the flag raising ceremony.
