Maitland Year End Curling Report
The final week of the
2016/17 season at the Mait-
land Curling Club saw
champions declared in two
divisions of each of the two
16 team leagues.
It is often the case for the
Super Bowl that a terrific
playoff season ends with a
disappointingly lopsided
game at the end. In three
of the four finals decided
on April Fool's Day that
happened but the drama
and shot -making of the
fourth game certainly
made up for it.
In the 'A' division of the
Wednesday/Thursday
league semis Charlie Craw-
ford and his Port Albert 'Ice
Cubes' team of Quaid Craw-
ford, Ron Durnin and Ray
Natuik scored one in the 8th
and stole another in the
extra end to edge Myles Mur-
dock and his team that
includes Peter Feagan, Caro-
lyn Brown and Sandy Mabon
8-7.
In the other semi Team.
Brown got down 3 - 0 early
to the team of Roger Moore,
Don Lindsay, Phil Foster and
Paula Krol but dominated
the rest of the game to win 7
- 5.
In the final Brown made
two terrific tap backs to
score two in the first end
when it seemed as if Craw-
ford had the end in hand.
Crawford responded with
one in the second but Brown
then shut the door the rest of
the game to cruise to an 8 - 1
win making champions of
himself, James Hickling,
Kate Nicholson and Karen
Kan filling in for Greg
Tiesma.
In the 'B' division Bob
Corrigan, recently back
from a southern sojourn,
was terrific as his team
which includes his wife
Jane as well as Brenda
Parker and Doug Yeo
routed the team of Donna
Adams 8 - 1.
In the other semi, The
`IceBergs' team of Simon,
Jan, Agnes and Ken
Logtenberg lost 8 - 5 to
Cathy Murdock, Vicki Cul-
bert, Joan Hutton and Liz
Wilson in a game that was
close to the end.
In another lopsided final
Parker scored on in the
first but Culbert came back
with four in the second
and from then on nothing
went right for the 'Parker
Gang' as Culbert scored a
decisive 10 - 1 win.
In the '13' division of the
Monday/Tuesday league
semis two teams showed
their dominance early and
often as they easily qualified
for the final.
Mike Dawson and his
team which includes son
Grant, Amy Ditner and
Karen Kan, subbing for Bob
Budd, were down 3 - 0 early
but stormed back with the
next 10 points for a 10 - 3
win. In the other semi Lau-
rie Ginn led her team of
DougYeo, Bert Dirven and
Wendy Chase to a decisive
11 - 3 win over Team
Natuik.
The final saw a close
game broken open in the
5th end with Team Dawson
stealing three on their way
to a comfortable 7 - 1 win
over Ginn despite playing
a man short the entire
game..
The 'A' division of the
Monday/Tuesday league
saw two teams get there in
dramatically different
fashions.
Marc Monforton and his
team of Jeff Sowerby, Barb
and Steve Graff jumped out
to a 5 - 0 lead in the semi-
final match with Team
McLean and breezed into
the final on the wings oj,a
convincing 10 - 3 victory.
The other semi-final
looked like it was going to
be similar as skip Vicki
Culbert and her team of
Brenda Parker, Cathy Mur-
dock and Donna Adams
built a 5 - 1 lead after five
ends.
The game turned in an
instant in the 6th end as
Adam Glenn scored a big

five ender to dramatically
take the lead.
Culbert managed to tie the
game with one in the 7th
leaving Glenn with the desir-
able position of having last
rock in the final end.
A great draw by Parker fol-
lowed by two excellent Cul-
bert guards left Glenn with a
very difficult raise take-out
with his final shot.
The shot racked on a
guard leaving Team Culbert
with a well deserved 9 - 6
win.
This final was the best
one of the day and in an
interesting twist it fol-
lowed a similar script to
the Culbert semi only in
reverse.
In this one Culbert took
the early 4 - 1 lead with four
in the 2nd only to see Mon-
forton respond with four of
his own in the 3rd. Culbert
responded with one in the
4th and a steal of two in the
5th.
It looked like Culbert
would steal three more in
the 6th but a terrific hit and
roll to the button to score
one averted disaster for
Monforton. Monforton then
stole three of his own in the
7th to go up 9 - 7 heading
home.
Culbert however scored
a clean two in the 8th to
send the game to an extra
end. In the extra the two
skips traded great shots
with their first but Culbert
just rubbed a guard with
her final shot leaving the
Monforton stone on the
button and giving Team
Monforton a well deserved
championship.
At .the banquet that
followed the day's curling
the four champions were
presented with handsome
championship plaques
made and donated by Bert
Dirven.
