Springing into action
Since Spring arrived a
number of local businesses'
have sprung into action
to partner with The Salvation
Army's efforts to March
Hunger Out of Huron
County.
Lieutenant David com-
ments that "the month
of April can often be very
hard for food banks as the
surplus items that were gath-
ered during the Christmas
Season have all been given
out and the shelves of the
food bank get quite depleted
before food drives around
Easter help to replenish
them."
The food banks service
those who need help in
our community 12 months
of the year, as between the
Goderich and Clinton
Community and Family
Services locations they
serve an average of 125
households a month with
food assistance.
Hickman continues:
"each household receives
approximately a full
banana box worth of food,
and so when you are giving
out 125 banana boxes of
food each month it is hard
for the regular donations
from various churches and

community groups to sus-
tain the inventory of food
needed?'
The Salvation Army food
bank recently placed an
order to Shanahan's Quality
Meats for 150 individually
wrapped packages of 11b of
lean ground beef to ensure
that households received
meat in their food
hampers.
Understanding the need
and wanting to help his
community, Chad Shana-
han provided the Salvation
Army with a very generous
discount on the ground
beef.
Due to the very low quan-
tity of food in the Local food
bank The Salvation Army
also placed a large food
order from the local Zehrs
grocery store, which also
provided a discount on the
two full pallets of food
ordered.
The Salvation Army also
held a very successful
Easter Food drive outside
Food Basics this past
weekend. Hickman con-
cludes: "it's amazing what
can be accomplished
when a community works
together and everyone
does their part."
The most needed items
at the moment for the
food bank are Rice,
Cereal, Oatmeal, Crack-
ers, Side Dishes, Tea and
men and women's hygiene
items.
The robins are back, the
green shoots are appearing
in the gardens; why not
spring into action and part-
ner with The Salvation Army
in Marching Hunger Out Of
Huron County. See page 3
