Captain John Vickers
descendant to take part in
'Frank Graham Bike Ride'
Katie McCaig to cycle
through England
and the Netherlands
in commemoration
of WWII veterans
Kathleen Smith
Goderich Signal Star
Captain John Vickers, the namesake
for Vickers Lane in Goderich, served in
both WWI and WWII. Vicker's great -
grand daughter Katie McCaig (34) is
taking part in the "Frank Graham -
Cycle Liberation Tour" later this
month.
"I am truly honoured to be repre-
senting Canada by taking part in
this tour, especially give the fact it
will be the last one. I amreally
looking forward to learning more
about the World Wars and the sac-
rifices made by the veterans,
including my great grandfather who
also fought in both world wars
said McCaig.
In order to be accepted into this
tour, participants must have a rela-
tive who is a WWII veteran, and for
Katie, that veteran is Captain John
Vickers.
The "Frank Graham - Cycle Libera-
tion Tour" will run its third and final
phase, when participants will com-
plete a cycle tour of various famous
(and less famous) resistance remem-
brance spots.
"Along the way, we will be paying
our respects and commemorating our
veterans by taking part in multiple
memorial ceremonies and by laying
memorial wreaths"; explained
McCaig.
The first phase of the liberation tour
was in 2013, and toured around Juno
Beach in Normandy, France.
The second was an emotional, per-
secution tour, focused on Auschwitz,
Poland, in 2015.
This final phase, concentrating on
the resistance during WWII, will tour
around notable streets and spots of
remembrance in the UK and
Netherlands.
The event is a great example on
how to pass the commemoration on
to the next generation. The cyclists
and participants are ambassadors of
freedom who will carry on the libera-
tion flame, as they honour the sacri-
fices made during WWII by laying
wreaths on each monument they
stop at.
With a start date for April 19, 2017,
the tour will begin in the town of Mar-
kelo. Spanning over a twenty-one days,
and various resistance remembrance
spots in both the UK and the Nether-
lands, the tour will conclude in the
Contrituted Photo
John Vickers, Captain on Imperial Fleet
during WWII. Vickers was born in England
and came to Canada as a boy.
town of Markelo.
On the final tour day, participants,
family, friends and host families, along
with pipe bands and veterans will
meet with the second -wave, which
includes Frank Graham, Together, they
will celebrate and commemorate the
efforts and sacrifices of WWII
liberators.
This unique experience is a life -
changing event for the partici-
pants. They will have the opportu-
nity to visit spots in the UK and the
Netherlands that are notable to the
sacrifice and efforts to liberate
Europe from the clutches of the
Nazi party.
Having the opportunity to be wit-
ness to first-hand accounts of what it
was for WWI veterans, and to feel
and experience these places that
hold emotional historical energy,
will have a position impact on the
participants.
McCaig added, "the purpose of
the tour (mainly for students), is to
teach them the history of the world
wars with the hopes they will
become future ambassadors, and
pass along information to future
generations".
One of the main reasons for the
"Frank Graham - Cycle Liberation Tour"
is to show what happened to the partici-
pants, to try to prevent such an event to
happen again.
The commemoration is meant to.
pass onto another generation, so they
can become ambassadors for a free
and tolerant society. See page 34 for
more photos.
