Goderich Signal Star
Students of St. Mary's
Catholic School and their
families, gathered in the
gymnasium for the Fourth
Annual Family Math Night
last Wednesday evening.
St. Mary's Parent Council
organized the event, with an
aim to engage, encourage
and inspire the students,
with all the possibilities that
math offers.
The goal to have students
see math in a different way -
to have fun with it - and to
understand that mathemat-
ics is in everything in our
day-to-day, from maps, to
panoramic photographs,
and even patterns on soccer
balls.
Principal Gaylene Hagarty
stated that the school board
Huron -Perth Catholic Dis-
trict School Board has made
it their mandate for the past
three years and ongoing, to
promote math.
"Nights like this help pro-
mote a positive attitude
towards math. They show
and demonstrate that math
can be fun and exciting.
David Swart shows our stu-
dents and parents that math
is everywhere in the world':

"I'm all about just having
fun. The way I think about it
is, there are people who
make a living as musicians,
who give concerts and study.
I kind of consider myself as
the guy at the campfire with
a guitar, who does it for fun,
and if other people take
something away from it,
then that's great", stated
Swart on his passion for
mathematic presentations
and the impact it has on
young students.

"David Swart has given
them (the students) oppor-
tunities to explore how math
is seen in everyday things. I
think nights like tonight are
important to clarify and to
help calm down the con-
cerns over math, and to
open up minds as to what
math actually is", said
Hagarty.
