Armour, the GDCI drama
production of adapted 'Car-
milla' moves forward to the
Regional Showcase of the
Sears Ontario Drama
Festival.
The Festival had its start in
'1946, founded by Ken and
Ann Watts, and has now
grown to 350 entries
annually.
Dedicated teachers and
community members are the
strength of the Festival, and
each year, more than 12 000
students and dedicated teach-
ers get involved, and this year
GDCI submitted an adapted
play of'Carmilla'
The original Anglo-Irish
novel 'Carmilla' written by
Joseph Sheridan LeFanu, is a
gothic romance primarily
centred around a vampire,
and Mr. Armoud adapted the
novel for the students.
"The theme of the play is
an important one. The two
central characters are
involved in a relationship
where, who they are, isn't
sanctioned; Mr. Armour said
as he described the main arc
of the story.
From Wednesday March
22 until Saturday March 25,
Mr. Armour and his produc-
tion team competed at Lis-
towel District Secondary
School in the District Show-
case of the Sears Drama
Festival.

"Shows from GDCI have
often advanced to the
regional and provincial
showcases. In the last 15
years, GDCI has been to pro-
vincials 10 times and region-
als 12 times'; explained Mr.
Armour.
Successfully advancing
into the second of three
rounds, GDCI's adaptation
of `Carmilla' will compete in
the Regional Showcase run-
ning from April 3 to April 8.
If the Regional Showcase
were to be successful for the
GDCI drama club, they
could advance to the Provin-
cial Showcase hosted in
Chatham from May 10 to
May 13.
The Drama Festival is not
just a showcase for theatrical
passion and talent, but can
also be very rewarding to
those successful productions
and students.
There are around 500
awards for participants in the
Drama Festival, and some of
the awards are as follows:
Four, $3 000 Ken and Ann
Watts Memorial Foundation
scholarships; Four $500 bur-
saries awarded to graduating
students pursuing performing
arts; Two $500 bursaries for
Technical Achievement.
GDCI will not be alone as
the only school production
from this area to advance to
the Regional Showcase -
Saint Anne's in Clinton also
has a drama group that sub-
mitted into the festival and
are also advancing to
Regionals. See page 21 for
more photos.
