To promote inclusion, acceptance

For a generation that fully
promotes equality and inclu-
sion, the students at GDCI
proved their support for any
minority group, whether it
be of the LGBTQ commu-
nity, or those marginalized
due to race.
A sunny afternoon, on
Wednesday March 29, a
group of students and teach-
ers took to the entrance
driveway and sidewalks to
their school, to promote the
ideas of diversity, inclusivity
and acceptance.
Walking up to the school,
the scene that unfolded was
one of beautiful chaos - stu-
dents frantically colouring
along the sidewalks,
entranceway and even the
walls of the school, as well as
running back and forth to
see what their peers were
working on, while teachers
oversaw the projects and
took photos.
Sarah Taming (13) and
Vanessa Millian (14) both
believe that it is important to
get the message out to the
community that "it's okay to
be different, to be who you
are" and that an activity such
as the rainbow colouring of
the school grounds is signifi-
cant because "we should be
including everyone, in any-
thing we do':
Some of the sidewalk art-
work was comprised of rain-
bows or colourful murals
that represented courage,
inclusion and friendship,
while others were quotes,
-which promoted love and
acceptance.
Eric Predett (15) explained
why the event brought life to
the school, "it shows how
much of a community we
really are. I think it's impor-
tant because it shows how
much this younger genera-
tion cares about equality,
banding together to create
something beautiful and
fun':

diversity.
Due to the display of rain-
bow artwork, even the crea-
tion of a rainbow crosswalk
at the entranceway to GDCI,
the students wanted it to be
known that the event,
although supportive of the
LGBTQ groups, was about
acceptance and inclusion to
any one person or group that
feels marginalized.
"It's bringing everyone
together, in unity. Everyone,
regardless of your race, your
size, your age or your sexual-
ity, everyone is coming

together to do this fun thing,
and I think it's great for our
school", said Joely De Jong
(16), as she and class mate
Shea Frayne (16) finished
with their beautiful wall
mural and posed for a photo.
On a beautiful afternoon,
the students of GDCI put
their voices out there to the
community, with a reminder
that love, diversity, inclusion
and acceptance, are qualities
and values we could all ben-
efit from. See page 19 for
