Walkerton -area man's death at salt mine probed

A contractor who died over the
weekend at the world's largest salt
mine was a 36 -year-old mace from
the Walkerton area.
The death of Darcy Clancy, of
Chepstow, whom Ontario Provin-
cial Police identified late Monday,
is being investigated by Ontario's
Labour Ministry.
Clancy's death was the third for a
worker in less than a decade at the
Sifto Salt mine in Goderich.
Labour Ministry inspectors
issued requirements for documen-
tation from Compass Minerals, the
parent company of Sifto Salt, and
Trade -Mark Industrial Inc., a Cam-
bridge -based contracting com-
pany, spokesperson Janet Deline
said.
Deline confirmed
the contractor worked for Trade -
Mark Industrial, a family -run
business that specializes in mill-
wrighting, rigging, electrical, pip-
ing and sheet -metal work and
heating, ventilation and air-con-
ditioning installations.
Chief administrative officer
Linda Straus declined to comment
on the death investigation earlier
Monday.
"I can't give you any of that infor-
mation right now," Straus said
when asked about the deceased's
history with the company.
A 2014 news report listed the
Sifto Salt mine as one of Trade -
Mark's customers.
Ministry officials turned the
scene over to.Compass after
ordering it secured and cleared
of staff underground following
the death Saturday.
The contractor was pronounced
dead at the Goderich hospital.
"Despite the immediate admin-
istration of emergency treatment
by on-site personnel and first
responders, the employee could
not be revived when he arrived at
the hospital," said a statement
from Compass, which bought
Sifto Salt in 1990.
"We extend our deepest sympa-
thy to the contract worker's family
and friends and we are cooperating
with the authorities."
"We are waiting for the coro-
ner's report on cause of death,"
Deline said, adding the investi-
gation continues.
Located nearly 550 metres
under Lake Huron, the Goderich
mine is the world's largest under-
ground salt mine.
The weekend death was the third
at the mine since 2009.
Normand Laberge, 61, was killed
when a tornado struck the mining
complex on Aug. 21, 2011. Laberge
was the only fatality from the tor-
nado, which badly damaged the
historic town centre of Goderich.
The 31 -year employee at the
urine was in a tower supervising
the loading of salt onto a ship when
the twister hit the Goderich
waterfront.
"Two years i:arlier, a man work-
ing in a salt dome died from
asphyxiation after falling into a
chute leading to a trench con-
veyor system on Aug. 27, 2009.
Sifto was fined $140,000 for vio-
lating Ontario's workplace safety
law.
Both fatalities resulted in coro-
ner's inquests, investigations that
probe the manner and cause of a
person's death. A jury gives rec-
ommendations at the end, but it
doesn't assign blame.
