Clinton splash
pad almost double
expected cost

Clinton's splash pad comes
with a much heftier price tag
than Central 1 luron council first
expected, however. they have.
decided to proceed with the
project regardless.
The pad's original price esti-
mate sat at S 160,000. This
amount is completely covered
by donations; the raceway is
donating $150,000, the Kinettes
are donating $10,000 and the
Optimists are donating $5000.
However the tender came in
at $283,932.68 plus almost
37,000 in HST, totalling just
about double the original. esti-
mate. The .unexpected cost
came from accessibility
upgrades that were not factored
into the original price.
"It all deals with ramping and
hard surface cementing to
access the splash pad and wash-
rooms because of the variation
in elevation in the area," said
Facilities Manager Steve
Campbell.
He said this will be the most
costly accessibility component
as it will include the washrooms
which service the entire park.
However other aspects of the
park will need to meet accessi-
bility standards as well.
Campbell said they "could
need retaining walls or railings
for the skate park and a hard
surface to get to it." The pavilion
will also need ramps.
Council passed a motion to.
fund the extra costs for the
splash pad using money from
the Erth (Erie -Thames) fund
from the sale of the former Clin-
ton PUC. In the recorded vote,
only Councilors Lobb and
Anderson voted against the
motion; Councilor Westerhout
was absent for the vote.
Campbell said they are still
working towards the goal of hav-
ing the splashpad open by the
end of May. After the splash pad
is built, the pavilion can go up,
as the two construction compa-
nies cannot legally build in the
park at the same time.
The skatepark and play-
ground equipment will be built
as funds become available as
the two still have fundraising to
do.
