20 Mexican exchange students to attend St Anne's for two weeks
School looking for more
Ar families to host a student
Justine Alkema
Postmedia Network
On April 15, 20 female stu-
dents from Mexico City will
arrive in Clinton and the sur-
rounding area for a very
unique opportunity.
The girls, who are between
the ages of 13-16, will be
attending St. Anne's Second-
ary School for two weeks and
living with host families.
The point of the program
is for the students to have an
English immersion experi-
ence; they -attend a bilingual
school in Mexico, so they
are very familiar with Eng-
lish though in varying
capacities.
The program is through
Red Leaf Student Programs
which has been bringing
international students from
around the world to experi-
ence Canada for 30 years;
for the last four years, they
have worked with the Avon
Maitland District School
Board and have sent stu-
dents to Clinton, Mitchell,
Seaforth, Exeter and more.
However this is their first
year working with the
Huron Perth Catholic Dis-
trict School Board. The
exchange students attend a
Catholic school in Mexico,
so they preferred to attend a
Catholic school here.
They separate students
individually into host
horses, creating a "buddy"
system: Each exchange -stu-
dent %%Till be paired with a St.
Anne's student of a similar
age attending all regular
classes with that student
staying in their home.
That means they are look-
ing for 20 host families. They
have 12-13 families already,
so they are looking for 7-8
more.
"[The students love]
learning more about our
communities, our Canadian
sports and our rural activi-
ties, and sharing all these
experiences with their new
found Canadian families
and buddies," said Gaby
Parjo, local coordinator of
Huron and Perth counties.
Parjo pointed out that the
since the students are from
Mexico City, which has a
population of almost 9 mil-
lion people, I luron County
is another world for them.
And they love it.
They will also do some
sightseeing while on their
exchange, including a day
trip to Toronto, Niagara
Falls, and local Canadian
activates such as skating
and a trip to the Blyth Creek
Maple Farm.
Parjo pointed out that
many families create close
bonds with their exchange
students and keep up with
each other for years
afterwards.
If you have a student
attending St, Anne's and
would like to participate in
the program, please contact
the school at 519-482-5454
for more information.
