Agriculture today -
a portrait of family
farms In Ontario
Hook on
sale now
Years ago, agriculture held
very little mystery, says
I Iuron County residents and
authors Telfer Wegg, Bonnie
Sitter and Fred Ilelwig as
they announce their coffee
table hook that will hit the
stands in late February.
"Every 100 acre farm was
essentially the same as the
next one." But life has
changed and so has farming.
In their 161 page hook, they
hope to provide a height-
ened awareness of today's
farming practices. In photos
and in story, they illustrate
the diverse and dynamic
agriculture of today.
This 9 x 12 inch, 160 page
hardcover book has five
main subdivisions: Live-
stock, Crops, Barns and
Silos, Selected Farms and
Snapshots of Farm Life.
Sitter says, "'I he Crops and
Livestock sections make up
the majority of the book and
deal with the various com-
modity groups using a com-
mination of colour photos
and descriptive text.
"The section on barns and
silos shows the old style and
the modern with explana-
tions of the purpose built
barns that are built to suit
the needs of a particular
type of stock. Pit silos and
grain storage bins are
explained."
The "Selected Farms" sec-
tion provides a more in-
depth look at five spc
cific farms - dairy, hogs,
beef/cash crop, apple
orchard and organic CSA.
Five counties are involved
with this section. Huron,
Bruce, Perth, Grey, and
Wellington.
A majority of the statistics
come from OMAFRA. "It is
not a "foodie" book and is
not meant to be an advocacy
book, although our preju-
dice toward today's technol-
ogy driven main -stream
commercial agriculture may
be evident," says Sitter.
The authors say this book
is "intended for the curious
open-minded individ-
ual with the hope that it
will provide positive infor-
mation to counter some of
the negative reports in
today's media. Children
and adults alike should
enjoy the photos of ani-
mals, crops, farm land-
scapes and farm
equipment."
Farmers should also
find it of interest as an
overview and for specifics
about other commodities.
With hundreds of photos,
many of full-page size, it
should appeal to all as a
gift book. The hook should
also be of interest to
schools, clubs etc. for its
educational value. The
"Did You Know? " sections
are sure to be an interest-
ing and fun read, they
said.
The books is $45 and is
available at Finchers in
Goderich and Miller's Coun-
try Store in Exeter with more
stores to be listed as the date
draws nearer.
