During that first month, besides his regular music duties, he played for four funeral services and looked after the music for the annual Mariners' Service. At that service, he accompa- nied the Harbouraires Men's Choir and was invited to become their permanent accompanist. Ile's been playing with them ever since and more recently also became accompanist for the choral ensemble Huron - Song. So much for slowly easing into a new job, but one gets the feeling that enthusiastic, outgoing Cedric wouldn't have it any other way. Born and raised with two brothers in tiny Neerlandia, 120 kill northwest of Edmon- ton, Cedric describes this small harslet as a commu- nity of Dutch immigrants, mostly farmers, boasting a general store, garage, school and Christian Reformed Church. 1Iis mother was a Dutch war bride and school teacher who immigrated to Canada in 1947 after meet- ing his father at the end of World War 11. From her European background, she acquired a strong apprecia- tion for music and decided Cedric should start piano lessons at age 10. At first, he took lessons from a local teacher but by 16, was study- ing in Edmonton. As a teen- ager, he earned $10 per year playing for his community church a couple of times a month. Cedric earned a Bache- lor's Degree in piano perfor- mance from the University of Alberta where he worked 10 years in the music library. For 10 years, at various times, he was church organ- ist and choir director for two different United Churches and a Lutheran Church in Edmonton before moving east to take up a position at St. John's Lutheran Church in Waterloo for another 10 years. He then returned to Edmonton where he spent two and a half years upgrad- ing his organ `skills. In Janu- ary 2015, he found his cur- rent position at Knox through the Royal Canadian College of Organists • classifieds. Cedric loves living in Goder- ich where he swims several times a week at the Y which he calls a "beautiful facility': He says Knox is a great place to work with its 20 -person strong choir and friendly, supportive people.1 le also hopes to start a children's choir soon. In his spare time, Cedric teaches piano and organ. Ile explains the major difference between playing the two instruments is in the feet. \-Vhile the set up of keys is the same on both, the foot pedals are unique to the organ. He says the Casavant organ at Knox Goderich is one of the finest in southern Ontario and one of the best he's ever had access to in a church. In April 2016, he gave a com- munity recital to demonstrate what this "king of instruments" can do, from producing the qui- etest whisper to making a mighty roar. He was so pleased with the attendance and posi- tive feedback that he's decided to hold another recital at Knox on Sunday; March 26 at 3 p.m. featuring the works of Boehm, Buxtehude, Bach and Boell- mann with a freewill offering to go toward maintenance of the organ.
