As someone who has been heavily involved in many aspects of the communities I have lived in, I knew the importance of officially intro- ducing myself to the commu- nity of Goderich and Huron County. I was born and raised in Waterloo, the middle of five children to a Waterloo Regional Police officer and a Waterloo Catholic District School Board high school teacher. During my early years in Waterloo I grew to love hockey (as do most Canadi- ans), and dare I say I had tal- ent and was noticed. Hockey was my first adventure in life. Hockey brought forth the opportunity to study at Provi- dence College in Rhode Island, United States on a full athletic scholarship; it pro- vided an opportunity to live overseas in both Germany (for four years) and England (where I studied journalism at University of Salford, Man- chester for two years). While studying and playing hockey overseas, in those six years I was also working and traveling around Europe when time would allow. Those experiences are ones that I will never forget. These experiences are ones that opened my mind to different cultures and different people, adapting to foreign foods, tra- ditions and languages (fluent Contributed Photo Photo taken during a game while played for the Memmingen Indians, in Germany.. in the German language). Then I came home to Canada. I knew what I wanted out of life, but seemed to be strug- gling with the next adventure after hanging up the skates and tucking away my passport (for now). An opportunity to work in the media industry came in several forms such as radio in Stratford and marketing com- panies based in Toronto. It wasn't enough; it was not intellectually stimulating nor challenging. I have heard a few wise peo- ple state that `things have a funny way of working out' (thanks Grandad) and `timing is everything'. As cliche as they sound, they could not be more true for me in the last week. It appeared that all of my life experiences and the most recent existential struggles led me to this very moment in my life and to this opportunity to be a contributing member of the journalistic society. This is my next adventure. I am excited for the opportu- nity to be the new editor of the Signal Star and equally excited to be here in Goderich - it is such a beautiful and scenic town, with events and attractions. It is a town that has offered me a very warm and kind welcome into the community. Contributed Photo Staring out to the ocean at the Cliffs of Moher in Ireland. Kathleen Smith/Goderich Signal Star On one of my many travels through Europe, standing in front of the Colosseum in Rome, Italy. If there is anything that my past experiences have taught me, it is that as long as I am open to new people and expe- riences, and if I continue to work hard and continue to find the passion in what I am doing, there is no obstacle that will deter my success at the Goderich Signal Star. So, thank you for welcom- ing me as your new Editor, and thank you to Postmedia Network Inc. for this opportunity. I am looking forward to giv- ing iving the community a voice and to keep the community informed. If you have any stories to be told, or events to be covered, feel free to reach out to meat 519-524-2614 x211, or kat- smith@postmedia.com. Cheers and Auf Wiedersehen.
