Kathleen Smith
Goderich Signal Star
A business owner with a
25th anniversary. An award
winning local artist. A wife. A
mother. A daughter. A survi-
vor. An artist.
Local artist Elizabeth R
VandenBroeck and proud
owner of Elizabeth's Art Gal-
lery has set a goal for herself
- 150 pieces of art depicting
Huron County landscapes by
July 1st, "What's the point of
opening a gallery, if I'm not
going to fill it with my own
work?"
That thought process
alone was a factor, but not
the only important piece of
momentum to propel Eliza-
beth towards setting a goal.
The goal of "Canada 150"
can be tied to many signifi-
cant milestones in Eliza-
beth's life -150 pieces for the
exhibit; the 25th anniversary
of successfully owning the
gallery; celebrating 5 years
since the car accident that
left her with a serious brain
injury and the inability to
paint.
All of these events and
milestones in Elizabeth's life
are intricate parts to her
story, or the process of
where she is today.
"The process is about me
finding my creative voice
again, to return to the place
where I feel like I can paint
again, to feel confident with
the style change of how I
paint':
Elizabeth laments the fact
that since the serious brain
injury, her process and
painting style have com-
pletely changed.
Named the 'Huron County
Artist of the Year' in 2011
and honoured with the
'Inspiring Women in Huron
County' award this year, in a
moment of introspection,
Elizabeth decided to push
herself with a goal of 150
pieces of her own original
sketches and final pieces to
be displayed at the gallery at
a public viewing on July 1st
to engage the audience on a
different level.
"Sharing the process is
such a different tactic than
just a finished product. I

hear the appreciation that
other people voice of my
completed pieces, but
there's a different voice in
my head and a look I think I
need to achieve, but it's
about engaging the audience
on a different level, which is
creating a different dialogue
of 'here is where I start and
here is where I finish":
The exhibit will be com-
prised of various stages of
Elizabeth's artwork, from
original sketches to first
drafts of oil paintings, to the
final images - displaying the
creative process of a celebra-
tion of the natural resources,
of Huron County
countryside.
Now that Elizabeth has
returned to her passion and
is able to paint again with an
exploration of style while
celebrating the Huron
County in her final pieces,
her biggest barrier to reach-
ing this goal is time and hav-
ing the energy to sit down
and paint.
"Creative energy isn't a
bottomless pit. It is like phys-
ical energy - it has to refuel.
And creative energy, when
used, is as exhausting as any
other energy"
For Elizabeth, the main
focus of this "Canada 150"
goal was not necessarily only
for a celebration of the Cana-
dian countryside, but a
return to a creative passion
after 5 years and letting go of
her own control by display-
ing the process of her crea-
tivity at the exhibit.
The "Canada 150" exhibit
will be held at Elizabeth's Art
Gallery in Goderich, with an
opening party the night of
Friday June 30th open only
for those who donate
through her GoFundMe.com
account.
The exhibit will also be
open for viewing to the pub-
lic on July 1st.
For those who are inter-
ested to be actively involved
in Elizabeth's exhibit can
donate to this artistic adven-
ture in her GoFundMe.com
account at https://www.
