Since 2002, the local clinic has been offering free legal help on things like landlord -tenant disputes, power of attorney, employ- ment law and disability claim appeals. Just recently, it began offering formal legal educa- tion sessions for the public, covering a different topic of interest each time. They're held every month in Stratford, at no cost. "Our purpose for doing these is we want to help peo- ple learn about the law and legal system," said Kim Bir- mingham, one of the clinic's lawyers, "and the goal is to provide them with the knowledge, the tools and the confidence." Those three things can help open doors for people who might otherwise not even know where to knock, she suggested. "They can take that infor- mation and take actions or make decisions that will empower them," said Bir- mingham, "because the legal system can he quite daunt- ing for people. When issues come up, they have no idea where to turn or what to do." A lawyer can help, she said. "But oftentimes, you don't actually need one. As long as you're equipped with the proper informa- tion, you can navigate a lot of things yourself," said Bir- mingham. "Or you can. maybe navigate to a certain point, and then you might need some expertise." The clinic has been offer- ing the public legal education sessions since September, and the feedback from partic- ipants so far has, been "very positive," said Birmingham. "I was just going to try it as an experiment to see how it would go, but people really seem to like it," she said. "They say they've learned a lot." The sessions represent a more focused look at legal issues of interest to people r IODE rectoiett g -ea gc Co/heti:ow oidte SATURDAY, MARCH 11, 2017 NOON TILL 4 PM ST. "We spent a lot of years when we first opened in 2002 just educating people about the clinic, who we are and what we do," she said. "Now I think the word is out, hopefully, that we exist. So now we're trying to delve into more concrete legal issues to help people that way." The free, plain -language educations sessions are held at the legal clinic at 59 Lorne Ave. E. in Stratford.
