THE ReeVENUE QUESTION.
To the Editor: -• z
Joseph Debar, President -Elect of the
Wholesale Ligeor Dealers Association,
demands that the Anti -Saloon League
tell where the immense Federal and
State Revenue of $325'000,000 would
come from in case National Prohibition
became law. The Editor of the Ameri-
can Issue answers him in the following
,manner: "Before we answer his ques-
tion we also propose to tell where the
$325,000,0('0 revenue comes from at the
present time. Debar and his ilk are
mighty careful to conceal the facts tie
they now exist."
"This enormous tax bill is paid nut of
the till of the Brewer, the Distiller and
the Saloon keeper. It reaches them
from the hand of the poor man. Be-
cause he has misused it. his wife is
consigned to drudgery and toil. His
children are in rags and poorly fed.
So in the last analysis the $325,000,000
revenue is paid by the most helpless
slaves in the land; namely, the wives
and children of drinking men, And Mr,
Joseph Debar wants this condition to
continue. It he has his way these
millions of poor slaves will he driven
deeper into the mire, the lash will be
laid on heavier, their miseries will be
multiplied until the grave swallows
them up and new slaves are put in
chains to take their places."
"What would the Anti -Saloon League
do to raise this $350,000,000 revenue?
First of all we would deduct the per-
centage of that amount which is caused
by the liqucr business and it is doubtfnl
if there would be any necessisy of rais-
ing any additional revenue,"
"At the opening of the present war
Russia went dry and by one stroke cut
off revenue to the amount of $40,000,000
with the result that crime of all kinds
has decreased 62 per cent, saving (kinds
deposits have increased in spite of the
war to an amount more than double the
entire revenue of the government from
ligour. Wages have been riased, the
people eat more and better food and
wear costlier and better clothing."
"Eighteen States are now getting a-
long with out rum revenue (Maine for
over sixty and Kansas for thirty
years) and we have not heard that any
of them have gone bankrupt. If
eighteen States can live and prosper
without rum revenue the Nation can
live and prosper without it."
"But let us suppose that there would
not be a cent of money saved in caring
for crime and poverty and that it would
be necessary to raise the whole
$325,000.000 of revenue, which the
liquor business is now turning in, Let
us say to Mr. Debar as plainly as the
English Language can express it, that
we would protest against one cent of it
being made by making helpless women
and children. We would raise the re-
venue as other revenues are raised at
the present time by taxing the incomes
of the wealthy and by other forms of
taxation which have no bearing on the
liquor business."
"But other States which have tried
it have found that Gladstone was right
when he said that given a sober people
there would be no difficulty in raising
revenue."

Mrs. Malloy, an old lady of Howick,
who is 95 years old, was in town on
Tuesday and marketed twenty -roe

John Duckett has traded his 50 -acre
farm, just south of the town iii Wawa -

farm just across the road in Morris,
and received $700 in cash. This deal
now gives Mr. Duckett 272 acres in
Morris.
A very quiet wedding took place at
the residence of Mr. Andrew Mitchell,
of Glenannan, on Tuesday evening of
last week, when his eldest daughter,
Annie, was united in marriage to Mr.
Walter Hawk. The nuptial knot was
tied by the Rev. Mr. Stewart, of Bel -

Two weeks ago, Mr. Stewart McGee,
clerk in the store of Mr. John Hanna,
received a kick from the delivery horse,
from which an abcess has resulted.
Mr. McGee will ,;be ]aid off duty for
some time. Fortunately for himself he
had taken out an accident policy only a

Those who go from Seville to Granada

the alcazar, an hour for luncheon and
on to further discoveries --that is the
Cordoba program. The hotels of Core
(lobe are, in eonsequence, unpalatial, a
circumstance in itself which endears
the little town to the judicious. I do not
believe there is a lift in all Cordoba,
and if your wife wishes for any reuses
to buy a new bat she must go out of
the hotel for It, and then it will be
three years old.
At night all the tourists are gone to
eeville or i;ranada, and you and the
l'ordobaus and the stars share the
amenities of Cordoba's one boulevard,
of which everybody is very proud, be-
cause it is much superior to anything

You could put your hat over Cordoba,
and very little would protrude. It Is
the compactest little town. From the

one building. You can hardly perceive

The first life insurance policy of
which the details are on record result-
ed in a lawsuit Wililam Gybbons in-
sured himself on .Tune 15, 1583, for
£333 against dying in twelve months.
He did die on key 18 of the next year,
and the disgusted underwriters (the
company of those days) contested pay-
ment on the plea that be had lived
twelve months of twenty-eight days
each.
DIAIIRHOEA
Was Caused By
Change of Diet, Etc.
Diarrhoea arises from many causes
such as, change of diet, change of water,
change of climate, catching Cold, the
eating of unripe fruits, or anything that
will cause or induce an excess of bile.
On the first sign of any looseness of the
bowels it should not be neglected, but
should be looked after immediately, for
if not diarrhoea, dysentery or some other
serious bowel complaint inay ensue.
Mr. Geo. Smith, Victoria, B.0 , writes:
"It is five years .ago since T ,'lest tried
Dr. Powler's Extraet of Wild Strawberry.
I was then on a timber survey, end`ituf-

THE REAPERS
(Lauehian Watt, in London Times.)
Red are the hands of the Reapers,
Arid the harvest is so white!
Red are feet that are treading
The threshing -floors by night.
And, on the young brows, dripping
As with the dews of morn,
Deep rose -red are the woundings,
Like sears of a corn of thorn.
Tired, 50 many, with reaping --
Tired with treading the grain,
Still they lie, in their sleeping,
Low in the Valley of Pain—
Never again to be quaffing
The joy of life, like wine;
Never again to be laughing
In Youth's glad hour divine.
Birds shall sing in the branches,
Children dance by the shore;
But they who shared the red reaping
Shall come back nevermore.
Let whoso can forget them,
Walking life's noisy ways;
We who have looked on the Reapers
Go quietly, all our days.
Summer engagements seldom surive
the feasts of winter.
Some fellows keep in touch with you
merely for touching purposes.
