Flyers blanked out and
eliminated from playoffs

The Goderich Orr Insur-
ance Flyers have been elim-
inated from the Provincial
Junior Hockey League play-
offs, losing four games to
one in a best -of -seven
series with the Mitchell
Hawks.
After winning the first
game of the series, 3-2, in
Mitchell, the Flyers dropped
four straight to the Hawks
last week.
Tuesday, they were shut-
out, 9-0, at home and then
they lost two games by iden-
tical 6-2 scores, Friday night
in Mitchell and Saturday
night at the MRC. The Hawks
wrapped up the series with a
6-0 win in Mitchell Sunday
night.
In the one game they
won, the Flyers managed
to stay out of the penalty
box, taking only two
minor penalties, and play-
ing five -on -five hockey,
which gave them a chance
against the stronger Hawk
team.
Tuesday's 9-0 shutout
loss was a totally different
story. It was a game with
no flow, partly as the
result of seemingly over-
zealous officiating by ref-
erees Scott Walls and Matt
Stirling. The Flyers took
the brunt of the penalty -
calling, serving 69 of the
79 minutes assessed. A big
part of this series was the
overwhelming strength of
the Mitchell powerplay. In
this game, the Hawks
scored five of their nine
goals with that powerplay
while the Flyers went 0-3
on theirs.
Derek Elliott scored
three of the Hawk's goals,
Chace Duckworth had
two, and Jack Finlayson,
Drew Gross, Blake Picker-
ing, and Joe McCarthy had
singles. Mitchell goalie
Wyatt Nicholson got the
shutout, stopping all 24
Flyer shots.
Game three, Friday, in
Mitchell saw the Hawks
score two goals a period
en -route to their 6-2
win. It was 2-2 after the
first, with Derek Elliott
and Quinton Haddock
scoring powerplay goals
for Mitchell. Trent
Buchanan scored the first
Flyer goal on his power-
play point -shot after tak-
ing a cross -ice pass from
defence partner Brad Wat-
son. Noah Kuno scored
the second Goderich goal,
banging in a loose puck
from a scramble in front of
the Mitchell net. Trent
Michie and Morgan Ben-
niwies were credited with
assists. Team captain
Tyler Pauli and Haddock
scored the second period
Hawk goals. In the' third,
Elliott and Nathan Tem-
pleman scored for
Mitchell.
Flyers goalie Nathan Wat-
son, who was strong
throughout the series, faced
46 Hawk shots, while Nichol-
son dealt with 21 shots at the
other end of the rink.
Saturday, at the MRC, the
Flyers put out a strong
effort, but just couldn>t

keep up with the stronger,
faster team. Five of the six
Mitchell goals were on
powerplays. Derek Elliott
had two Hawk goals, while
Blake Pickering, Bryce
Mayea, Tyler Pauli and
Jamie Shoemaker had one
apiece.
The Flyers got a first
period powerplay goal from
Noah Kuno when he took a
pass from behind the net
from Trent Michie follow-
ing Brad Watson>s point -
shot. Tyler Stacey tipped in
Trent Buchanan>s second
period shot from the point
for the other Goderich goal.
Tyler McCracken got the
second assist. Again Nate
Watson played well in goal
for the Flyers who were
outshot 39-21. Coach David
Errington was pleased with
the new line of Kuno,
Michie and Marcel
Fohkens, put together
because of injuries to other
players. Although Fohkens
was kept off the scoresheet,
he made a solid defensive
contribution.
