Q and A with Kelly Elson AKA, the psychic med
Shaun Gregory
Postmedia Network
What's your first and
last name and where are
you from?
My name is Kelly Elson. I
grew up in a hamlet called
Lieury not far from Parkhill,
Ont. In a place so small you
need to use your imagina-
tion to stay occupied, so I
started with creating some
imaginary friends to keep
me company.
In your field, what is
the official title that you
go by?
Although I'm not one for
labels because stereotyping
is rampant in my field, I do
advertise as a Psychic
Medium so people can
understand the fundamen-
tals of what I do.
When did you start in
the reading business,
elaborate please?
No one grows up with a
plan to be a psychic as it's
not exactly a plausible life
plan with a predictable out-
come. It was always an inter-
est however, and although in
retrospect I had strong expe-
riences since I was a child, I
began to consciously prac-
tise and offer readings to
others around 1992. At first
of course I was flying blind.
Confidence and trust in what
you're seeing when dealing
with the unknown doesn't
develop ovemight, so when I -
started I allowed others to
offer donations only. I
deeply appreciated them
because in my view, they
were allowing me to practise,
and their feedback was fun-
damental in my develop-
ment. At no time did I -truly
envision that providing intu-
itive readings would become
my full time work, but as the
years passed and I did more
and more, my phone just
started to ring, and it's never
slowed down.
-When did' you first
find out that you could
talk to people in the
afterlife?
The mediumship wasn't
immediately apparent to me
as a psychic. I knew I would
'see' and 'feel' my loved ones
sometimes, and get flashes
of people in readings but for
the first few years I just con-
sidered the messages com-
ing from guides, or I was
reading it from their own
energy and it wasn't neces-
sarily coming from the other
side in any way. Also for the
first few years the readings
were done via handwriting,
and were performed when
the person wasn't present. In
2000 I started noticing mes-
sages coming in strongly as 1
was practising Reiki with
others. (Reiki is an ancient
hand technique used for
energy/chakra balancing
and relaxation.) While I had
my hands on them I began
to see specific people more
clearly, and hear names that
when I shared them, it fit
with loved ones who had
passed away. This is how the
readings transitioned from
handwritten in private, to
sitting with and simply
speaking to the client. I
slowly realized that these
people were actually present
and sharing information in
real time. That opened up a
desire to study more and
understand as much about
the process as I could.
Can you paint a pic-
ture of what you see or
feel when performing a
reading?
At the clinic, my business
manager Jessica handles all
the appointment scheduling,
so at my strict request I am
only ever provided with a
first name. My first order of
business is always to
describe what will happen
from start to finish, and why.
After offering my theories on
where they are physically,
how they exist and commu-
nicate, what will and wont
happen during the session (I
don't believe in evil spirits
and certainly don't ever pre-
dict accidents or deaths) I
begin my 'viewing'. Simply
put, my mind (and the
minds f others) function
somewhat like a viewfinder.
All logical and survival'
thinking takes place in the
left hemisphere of the brain.
(It may surprise many to
know that I am sceptical and
believe strongly in science
and critical thinking, and
encourage others to do the
same. The right hemisphere
of the brain has more expan-
sive capabilities because it's
where we are able to fabri-
cate thoughts and images.
This part of the brain is very
creative and therefore
doesn't require something to
be physically existent in our
vibrational field in order to
see it. So when I am 'on' I
simply observe what comes
into my imagination and
pass on my initial thoughts
before my logical brain can
interfere with the'transmis-
sion: (I have often wished I
could project the beautiful
things I see, or draw it for

others, but sadly their loved
ones would look like stick
people.) Try to think of your
loved ones on the other side
as radio frequencies...ever
present, completely invisi-
ble, with you wherever you
go, full of their own unique
information, and always
looking for a receiver to
download to. Our right
brains are those receivers
and we all have direct con-
nection to higher frequen-
cies. I am often asked if I
believe I have a special gift
and my answer is no. This is
an innate aspect of life avail-
able to all of us, each brain
being perfectly well
equipped to see beyond our
three dimensional field.
However I also compare it to
other natural gifts like sing-
ing. Yes, we can all do it but it
doesn't mean that everyone
is naturally good at it.
Who shows up in these
readings?
Relatives, friends, neigh-
bours, pets, and even some-
times relatives you haven't
met. Recently I've been see-
ing people from further and
further back in time. I always
know when this happens
that the client has been
on ancestry.com. I am a
medium that likes my infor-
mation to be verifiable, so
seeing someone from 200
years ago only happens
when the client knows who
he or she is. I love it when
this happens; it's like step-
ping back in time.
-Do you ever come
across people that are
non -believers, are they
rude and how do you
deal with these types of
people?
Over the years I have
encountered many reactions
when people find out what I
do. It ranges from extreme
curiosity to extreme fear, but I
must say that those who
oppose and judge me tend to
do it behind my back, thank-
fully. I receive the odd anony-
mous letter in my mailbox or
message via social media call-
ing me a witch, or trying to
help me see the error of my
ways. I handle it with humour,
and always offer them a big
psychic hug, because I don't
have time or energy to seek
the approval of strangers. You
can't do what I do and care
about fitting in.
-I hear you are teach-
ing as well, how's that
going?
Around 2002 I noticed a
desire in many of my clients
to understand their own
intuitive abilities, so with the
help of my sister Kim, I
developed several psychic
development classes and
workshops. In recent years
the demand for the classes
has increased dramatically,
so I now offer them every
spring and fall at my clinic in
Goderich. Many students are
waiting on more advanced
classes, and to them I say I'm
working on it. I also teach
Reiki and have another intu-
itive healer, Cindy DeJong
who works with me, offering
classes in Angel Therapies
and Shamanic studies. Peo-
ple don't necessarily take
these classes to learn to do
psychic readings. Often they
just want to uncover a
deeper sense of trusting
themselves, reading their
surroundings, analyzing
their dreams or just simply
knowing they are on the
right path and feeling the
presence of their loved ones.
-Lastly, any big
announcements on the
schedule?
There are a couple new
developments for 2017. A
new website is currently in
development with the fabu-
lous guys at FauxPop media
in Goderich. When that is
launched we will be
announcing all classes, new
services, and upcoming
shows. (Watch for me in the
meantime at Hesseland
Country Inn and Part 11 Bis-
tro in Blyth. I will also be
announcing a secondary
location in Toronto where I
will be available for personal
readings beginning in the
spring. And finally, I will be
continuing to produce and
perform in the comedy show
(yes, I do readings in the
show) which launched last
year with my bestie and
partner in crime Susan Stew-
art. We took 'Seeing the
Lighter Side of Life and
Death' on tour around
Southern Ontario last sum-
mer and had an absolute
blast.
