In 2013 Goderich com- memorated the centenary of the Great Storm of 1913. An estimated 274 lives were lost, including three local men aboard the Wexford, in this terrible tragedy on our waters. Just three years later, in October 1916, stormy waters on Lake Erie took the lives of 51 sailors and sank four ships in what became known as Black Friday. Ten Huron County sailors died when the steamer Merida went down in this storm. Our dead are never dead to us, until we have forgotten them." — George Eliot One of the young men who died was Rod McDonald, brother of Donald McDon- ald who had died aboard the Wexford. Three of the Meri- da's crew were members of Knox Presbyterian Church, home to the Goderich & Dis- trict Mariners' Service. The Mariners' Service is one of the oldest traditions not only at Knox but possi- bly in the entire commu- nity. Starting as the "Sailors & Fishermen's Service" in 1903, it continued every spring just before shipping season until 1914 when the Rev. Dr. George Ross, then minister at Knox who had just conducted the memo- rial service for victims of the Great Storm the year before, combined the pre- vious service to "bless the fleet" with another memo- rial tribute to storm victims & renamed it the Mariners' Service. Now, 103 years later we continue as a com- munity event not only to ask God's blessing on the current shipping season but to honour the memory of all who have lost their lives on our waters. At this year's' 103rd Annual Goderich & District Mariners' Service Sunday, February 26, the guest speaker will be the Rev. Ernie Naylor of Atwood Presbyterian Church. Originally commissioned by St. Anne's school band in Clin- ton from acclaimed composer Jeff Christmas, the score is inspired by the Great Storrs and divided into three themes: Hymn to the Foundered, Wexford Shanty & November Witch. There will be commentary to explain each piece. The sanctuary will be decorated with flags and shipping memorabilia to add to a moving experience. Following the 2:30 p.m. service, there will be refresh- ments and fellowship down- stairs in MacMillan Hall where marine exhibits, including many new ship models on loan, can be viewed.
