Geoff Peach was pioneer in coastal management Peach helped 47 found Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation Lynda Hillman-Rapley Postmedia Network Whale staff and board members for the Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conserva- tion are mourning the loss of one of the organization's founders, condolences are pouring in from those who knee and worked with Geoff Peach. Peach, who helped estab- lish the Centre in 1998, and who was a "significant voice in coastal management in Ontario" for over 30 years, died Jan. 28. He was 56. "His wisdom, his wit, and his ability to effectively com- municate complex scientific issues about Lake Huron, brought a deeper under- standing to the coastal com- munity," a colleague from the Centre wrote. "He was a respected educational resource to elementary and secondary schools as well as university programs." Peach co-founded the Centre with colleague Pat- rick Donnelly to develop a professional organization dedicated to conserving coastal areas of Lake Huron. The work revolved around research, education and community outreach. Stephanie Donaldson, a founding board member, said Peach was a "pioneer voice" in coastal manage- ment, and when the Centre was founded, the federal Fisheries & Oceans depart- ment "was looking after the water but no one was look- ing after the shore." But that changed because of Peach. "It was immediately obvi- ous that Geoff's vast knowl- edge of and passion for the shore and coastal dynamics and coastal processes went to the very heart of his being," said Donaldson. "Early days saw the three of File photo/Postmedia Network Geoff Peach, in a photograph from November 2010, at a Port Franks biodiversity protection and education project. us representing the Coastal Centre at conferences in Toronto and around the Great Lakes. We arrived on the radar screen of the major players and began receiving awards. All this on a shoe- string fuelled by Geoff's ded- ication to our beloved shoreline. Donaldson continued: "Our Great Lake, Lady Huron, and her shoreline have lost a dedicated, impas- sioned and extremely knowl- edgeable warrior." The Healthy Watersheds supervisor with the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority said Peach was a skilled educator and com- municator, and .that her organization benefited from his knowledge, commitment and leadership on behalf of Lake Huron. "Sometimes issues around the Great Lakes are very complex, yet he was able to inform us all about Lake Huron processes in an easy to understand and helpful manner," said Mari Veliz. Armed with a BA in Geog- raphy from the University of Western Ontario, Peach began his career as the shoreline management co- ordinator for two conserva- tion authorities. He was then a wetlands evaluation tech- nician for the Ontario Minis- try of Natural Resources, working within the Lake Erie watershed. Among his responsibilities with the Centre, Peach developed partnerships with other organizations, groups and individuals interested in conserving Lake Huron's coastal environment. He undertook research projects on coastal environmental issues, providing technical help to municipalities, agen- cies and individuals regard- ing coastal environmental issues. Peach also sat on the Regional Blue Flag commit- tee that evaluates applica- tions for International. Blue Flag beach status, organized conferences and workshops and fund -raised over Si mil- lion in private and govern- ment grants. In an e-mail to the Lake- shore Advance, a colleague wrote: "Those who knew Peach knew he focused on his family, his friends and his love of Lake Huron. He was able to overcome significant visual challenges and more recently battled cancer. He strived for collaboration whenever possible in his dealings with contentious environmental issues and was successful in bringing people together. His deter- mination to improve the health of the Lake, the lives of those who live near it, and the coastal communities will be greatly missed." A memorial service was held Feb. 4 in London. The Centre is working to establish the Geoff Peach Coastal Scholarship Fund for Ontario university students who have research interests in coastal sciences.
