A state-of-the-art defi-
brillator was installed at the
Agriplex last week to
accommodate the commu-
nity's aging population and
was the result of a years'
long partnership between
the Seaforth Agricultural
Society (SAS) and OBN
Security.
The Canadian security
company has contributed
half of the $2,500 cost of the
automated external defi-
brillator (AED) while SAS
will pay the remaining
balance.
Lyle Haney, president of
the SAS, said this medical
equipment was needed for
the venue, given that the
town is becoming known
as a retirement
community.
'The arena over there has
one, the Legion has one, any
public place that you might
have an issue, should have
an (AED)," he said.
With hosting events that
serve alcohol, such as stag
and doe parties, which is one
of the Agriplex's most popu-
lar events, Tom Wheildon,
OBN's director of operations,
said it's best to have a defi-
brillator and not need it than
the other way around.
"When you [take the unit
off) the wall and open it, it
talks to you. It walks you
through the steps," said
Wheildon, during the
machine's unveiling cere-
mony Jan. 25. "You never
know when you might need
this."
The portable device i
able to monitor the heart
rhythm of a person suffer-
ing from cardiac arrest and
to administer an electric
shock to restabilize the
heart beat if needed.
Currently, OBN is in con-
tract with the SAS to 2020.
Wheildon said the recent
AED installation in Seaforth
is beneficial since all of his
OBN security personnel are
trained to operate it, along
with First Aid and CPR.
This specific training is not
a requisite for most security
agencies, stated Wheildon,
however it only makes sense
to be conscious of the health
concerns relating to events
that welcome people in large
groups.
"We do a lot of stuff, we
are here in Seaforth, but we
also work at large venues,"
commented Wheildon. "For
instance, the Barry Molson
Centre, where we'll have
5,000 people at a Hedley
concert"
"The chances of problems
or medical urgencies at an
event like that happen on a
regular basis, we need peo-
ple that aretrained and
ready to service the public:"
With the recent termina-
tion of the advanced care
paramedics program in
Huron County, (Ontario's
first municipality to do so),
Brehan MacNeil, the execu-
tive officer for OBN, who is
also a paramedic graduate,
respects the healthy initia-
tives his company is
undertaking.
"That's one of the things
that is special about us, all of
our guards are specially
trained to use these
machines," stated MacNeil.
"We are trained. before we
come out to every event and
honestly, we see it as an
asset while we are working at
different events."
"It's not just for older peo-
ple anymore, unfortunately,
it's for younger people as
well."
