He has been a fire fighter for his entire career; he began this job eight months after returning to Blyth from university. Now, Sparling is taking his career in a new direction; he'll be working with his family, brother Steven Spar - ling and nephew Grant Spar - ling, at Cowbell Brewery. There are several things Sparling will miss about his job as a fire chief, including the personal in his department. "It's pretty neat being in an organization where you see the difference you make fairly immediately. I'm going to miss that," he said. "Fpr me as chief, I'm no longer on the scene; it's all personal on a fire scene. As a fire chief the last few years, seeing my personal in action and doing a good job is the ultimate reward in a career as a fire chief." However what Sparling won't. miss is the time commitment the job demands. Last year around budget time, Sparling advised the North Huron council that the position was too much work; he said it was months more work per year than a full-time job should be, and it wasn't sustainable. • At that time, council agreed to have a consultant review the position. How- ever though that was almost a year ago, the con- sultant's study has yet to come before council. "That was a key driver for me to make this change." That consultant's refit will come before North Huron council on February 21 with recommended changes. Sparling said that after being in the department for so long, he is convinced of the need for shared services between municipalities. "When 1 look at the fire department in particular, 51% of North Huron's fire department [operates] through contract service to neighboring municipali- ties." About half the work of the department involves assisting with incidents in surrounding municipalities. "When you're in that envi- ronment, it really raises your awareness of the need to make shared services work. I hope there's the political will to do so."
