HomeMy WebLinkAboutGoderich Signal Star, 2017-02-01, Page 11South Huron Chamber of Commerce hosting another job fair Plans are underway to host a South Huron Job Fair on March 09, 2017, from noon until 6 p.m. at the Exe- ter Legion. Last year's event was a success with 16 exhibi- tors and over 250 job seekers in attendance. Building on the success and the positive response from employers and job seekers, this year's event will be held in a larger venue and will be expanded to focus on additional sec- tors as well as student sum- mer employment. Last year, employers were impressed with the number of job seekers that attended the job fair. "We heard from employers that the Job Fair was (the) least expensive (that) they've participated in, but they got the best results'; said Tine Buechler, Vice President of the South Huron Chamber of Com- merce. She went on to note: "The impact of an afternoon spent with intentional job seekers resulted in a good number of hires in 2016, a very cost effective way to gain new employees': This year's job fair hopes to feature employers from various sectors including: manufacturing, tourism, food service, retail, construction, transportation, agriculture and more. Employers with summer positions are also encour- aged to exhibit as the event will be marketed to area high schools. In 2016, companies hired for a variety of posi- tions including office/ administration, sales and marketing, food service, skilled trades, and manufacturing. In 2016, job seekers attended from a variety of communities within a 30 -kil- ometer radius of South Huron including St. Mary's, Parkhill, Bayfield, Goderich, Strathroy, Seaforth, Grand Bend, and London. Most job seekers came dressed to impress and brought copies of their resume. In 2017, a job seeker coaching element will be offered. For first-time job fair attendees and those unsure of how to make the most of the event. The South Huron Cham- ber of Commerce (SHCC) will organize the 2017 event, in partnership with the Cen- tre of Employment and Learning, Conestoga Career Centre, Municipality of South Huron, and the County of Huron's Economic 13P7-iivirtg Development Services. ']he group collaborated on last year's Job Fair to help local businesses find the employ- ees they need to succeed, and to support growth in the local economy. Joan Brady, SHCC Execu- tive Director, qualified the importance of the event, she said: "Attracting work- ers and having the right skill sets available has been identified as the largest barrier to business growth and expansion."
