Playoffs begin
for the Flyers
Special to the Signal
The Walkerton Hawks fin-
ished first in the Provincial
Junior Hockey League, over
10 points ahead of the sec-
ond place Mitchell Hawks.
Finishing on top gave the
Walkerton team the option
of playing the seventh. place
Goderich Orr Insurance Fly-
ers in the first round of the
playoffs or taking a bye.
After Saturday night's 7-4
loss to the Flyers at the MRC,
Walkerton may have been
taking some second
thoughts on which way to go
with their choice. In their
five previous games with the
Flyers, the Hawks had won
handily, but Saturday night
was a different story
The Flyers came out
strong, jumping off to a two
goal first period lead on
goals by Marcel Fohkens and
Noah Kuno and led 3-2 at
the end of the period after
the Flyer's Jack Francis sand-
wiched his first of two goals
between goals by the Hawks
Lauchlin Elder and Braden
Boley.
Boley and Elder's brother,
Spencer, put Walkerton into
a 4-3 lead with early second
period goals, but Francis and
Kuno both scored their sec-
ond goals of the game to
establish a 5-4 Flyer lead
after two periods.
Two unanswered power-
play goals by the Flyers in
the third period, scored by
Riley Connors and Logan
Kellington, gave the Flyers
their convincing 7-4 win
over the first place Hawks.
The Flyers powerplay was
instrumental in the victory,
scoring on three of four
chances, while the Hawks
were only two for seven on
their powerplay opportuni-
ties. The Flyer's victory was
their fifth of the season,
along with four ties, in 36,
games. Walkerton finished
with 29 wins, six losses, and
one tie in their 36 games.
The Flyer's coach, David
Errington, felt his team
proved to themselves that if
they compete hard and
avoid penalties and they can
play with any team in the
league. He saw it as a good
way to go into the playoffs
and he paid tribute to the
team and especially to the
play of Jack Francis, Marcel
Fohkens, Brad Watson and
the Kellington brothers, as
well as Branden Bean for his
solid play in goal.
The Walkerton Hawks fin-
ished their schedule on Sun-
day, losing to the Mitchell
Hawks, 7-4.
After the game, the Walk-
erton
alkerton team announced that
they will take the bye, and
this leaves the Flyers playing
the first round of the play-
offs against the Mitchell
Hawks.
At press time, Flyers Gen-
eral Manager, Dan Kerr, was
still in the process of setting
up the game dates with
Mitchell.
The possibility is that the
first game would be Friday
here at the MRC, with the
second game in Mitchell Sat-
urday night, but Kerr still
needed to confirm the avail-
ability of ice -time at the
MRC.
Consult the Flyer's website
for further details.
