Lift Huron hopes to lift teens to safety with donations to local charities On Jan. 16, the members of Lift Huron disbursed its annual savings to local char- • ities, organizations, and fam- ilies dealing with medical expenses. The non-profit Olympics weightlifting club for teens raises money throughout the year by host- ing quarterly weightlifting competitions, organizing clothing fundraisers and donating their club mem- bership fees to the fund. The teens then donate their raised funds to local chari- ties and organizations. This year the teens allocated their funds to the All Points Chari- table Fund, Safe Homes for Youth, the Huron Respite Network, the Huron branch of the OSPCA and Hunter Costello and his family. The club has also reserved funds to offer two Steve Darbyson Memorial Awards to Grade 8 students in June. Lift Huron began in Janu- ary 2014 to honour the memory of Darbyson, who passed away in 2011 after a courageous battle with ALS. His strength, generos- ity and dedication to coaching youth inspired the idea to have a charita- ble teen weightlifting club where youth can learn to lift weights safely and, at the same time, give back to the community. To date, Lift has donated $4,500 in Darbyson's memory to date. Lift Huron operates out of the Menesetung CrossFit gym, located at 199 Anglesea Street, Goderich, where teens practice the two Olym- pic Lifts: the snatch and the clean and jerk.
