The pro- gram helps with financial funding up to $500 annually per child ages 0-17 to cover equiment and sup- ply needs, registration fees, and safe transportation options. Jenn Evans of the YMCA in Goderich said: "I have been very fortunate to see the possibilities in our youth with the support of the RASP program. For instance, a young man that wanted to partici- pate with his friends playing bas- ketball now has the opportunity to be included as RASP funding was available to reduce the financial barrier. This program would not be possible without.the ongoing sup- port of the United Way Perth- Huron." RASP has assisted 420 children since it started three years ago, includ- ing Meredith and her two boys. "1 was working two part-time jobs and a variety of shifts," said Meredith, "there just wasn't enough to cover sports fees and I wanted my kids to be active and included in the community." RASP gave Meredith's children the opportunity to try out a couple of different activities to see which one best fit, without wasting money and support. She has since shared her positive experience with the staff at the YMCA and how they made her feel empowered. "I do know how stressful and embarrassing asking for financial support can be, but they made the process better. There was no judge- ment and they were always focused on the kids." The known benefit of sport, arts and recreational activities in chil- dren's lives include increased self- esteem and other positive effects on mental health as well as physi- cal improvements to health. We hear that Bob Wilkins and Dave Dawson have been looking after and flooding the rink at the Ag. Hall for the kids. Good work, guys. I wonder how Santa got them down the chimney? . Trent Grummett and Brett Alton got their snowmobile Licenses on Jan. 14 in Clinton. Well done, boys. A petition has been circulating around the village to make the empty. lot on the corner of Joseph and Southampton streets into a park with a gazebo and the Lions Club would like to put a War Memorial in this area near the present playground. Recently, a horse and buggy was hit by a car near Milverton. A 74 -year-old man was killed. The driver was charged. We must remember that these vehicles have the right to be on the road and we should respect that. When coming up on a buggy, slow down and move over when passing them. Don't blow your horn, as this can startle the horse causing it to rear up and possible jump in front of a car. My feeling is they should have flash- ing red ligfits on the back of their bug- gies, especially at night, as well as the slow sign. Got news? Phone Shag or Joan at 529-7734. .
