13 am always amazed at the
ridiculous questions pro
thletes get asked after a
round of golf, game or match.
Having played competitive golf
growing up I know the sacri-
fices you and your family make
to get you to the next level. Ask-
ing an athlete how do you feel
after that loss? Worst question!
Of course they feel terrible. Of
course they wanted to win,
they wouldn't be in this posi-
tion if they didn't want to win
As a rule, golfers are notori-
ously closed -lipped and con-
servative when it comes to
interviews. I find that is
because it's an individual
sport they tend to be very
cautious of what they say and
the ramifications that take
place when they aren't. I want
interviewers to get me some
dirt by asking questions like:
whose your favourite person
to play golf against, who do
you find helps your game the
most during practice?

Here are some terrible
interviews that make you
think: "they said what?"
Vijay Singh in 2003 was
quoted by an Associated
Press reporter saying he
hoped Annika Sorenstam
missed the cut when she
made her celebrated appear-
ance in the PGA Tour's Bank
of America Colonial that
same year. "Why?" Singh
said. "Because she doesn't
belong out here:'
In 2008 Hunter Mahan
made headlines before his
first Ryder Cup saying: "'the
he
PGA of America is more con-
cerned about making money
than actually winning, all the
fun has been sucked out of
the event for the players." He
even compared participating
to being "a slave that week."
Gary Player went into a
major rant at the US Open at
Chambers Bay in 2015 saying:
"The worst golf course I
might've ever seen in the 63
years as a professional golfer...
The USGA, who I admire and
have chosen great golf courses
in this great United States of
America -- they're preaching
speed of play. Enjoyment. User-
friendly. This golf course here, if
you're a 10 handicap, you
couldn't break 100 if you had
the best day of your life. They've
got pros putting from 20 feet
and hitting the ball 20 foot to
the right, a man misses the
green by a yard and he's 50
yards down in the valley. I
mean I don't understand it."
Back when the Ryder Cup
was making headlines in Octo-
ber Phil \iickelson com-
mented on Hal Sutton's deci-
sion to pair hint and Tiger
Woods together in 2004. "We
ended up not playing well," he
said. "And was that really the ...
the problem? I mean, maybe.
But we were told two days
before that we were playing
together. And that gave us no
time to work together and pre-
pare:' Phil was being honest
He's used to playing with a low
spin ball and Tiger plays with a
high spin ball, both ofwhich
are very difficult to get used to
in high-pressure situations and
only two days to practice. He
later made an apology.
All athletes have opinions,
sometimes they get are criti-
cized for the comments they
make, other times they are
praised for their remarks.
At the end of the day; they
are still human.
With nine players missing, the Flyers struggle to contain the Ironmen in a 9-1 defeat
Richard Madge
For almost the entire season,
the Wingham Ironmen and the
Goderich Orr Insurance Flyers
have occupied'the last two
places in the Provincial Junior
Hockey League standings, and
a few weeks ago the Flyers had
visions of catching up to the
sixth place Ironmen, but the
Ironmen took on a new life put-
ting together a five -game win-
ning streak, which includedvic-
tories over both Walkerton and
Mitchell, both Hawks and the
two top teams in the Pollock
Division standings.
The Ironmen came to the
MRC looking for their sixth
consecutive win when they
played the Flyers here. Satur-
day night, Jan. 14.
They got it, but the Flyers
made them work hard for it.
Coming back from a 3-1 defi-
cit at the end of two periods, the
Flyers were within one goal of
the Ironmen and had goalie
Branden Bean on the bench in
favour of an extra attacker as
they pressed for the equalizer in
the final minute, but the Iron -
men held on to extend their
impressive winning streak.
Flyers coach David Errington
was pleased with how his team
battled back into contention in
the fast -paced game, not giving
up despite being down by two
goals in the third period.
Marcel Fohkens, who
played for the Flyers last year,
returned to the lineup for the
first time this season. Flyers
General Manager Dan Kerr
announced his signing last
week, saying that the 6; 190
pound, 21 -year-old forward
would add strength to the Fly-
ers' attack in the playoffs.
Fohkens scored midway
though the tl"urd period, finish-
ing off a goalmouth scramble
set up by another new player,
Will Thibeault, who took a big
hit to do it. That goal made the
score 3-2, but at the 17:44 mark
of the period, it looked as
though the Ironmen had
clinched it when Greg Scott
scored for Wingham, but the
Flyers Trent Michie scored at
18:05 to set up the Flyers' last-
minute attempt to tie the game.
Trent Buchanan assisted on
Michie's goal and scored the
Flyers,' and the game's, first goal
late in the first period when the
Flyers were shorthanded. Jack
Francis and Noah Kuno had
assists on that goal
In addition to Scott's goal
the Ironmen got two from
Jeremy Ross and one from
Owen Sullivan.
The Flyers took six of the
eight minor penalties
assessed in the game, but
neither team managed to
score a power play goal.
Wingham had a slight 31-27
edge in shots on goal.
The Flyers had a tough
outing last Friday night in
Walkerton, Iosing 9-1 to the
league -leading Hawks.
Walkerton got two goals each
from Lauchlin Elder, Cole
Walker and Branden Welsh and
singles from Connor Patton,
Justin McCrae and Braden
Boley. The Flyers' goal was
scored by Tyler McCracken,
assisted by Brad Watson and
Mitchell Kellington.
