The purpose of the youth grants is to assist young leaders in address- ing issues that are impor- tant to them and their community. Projects must have a lead youth applicant (age 14-25) and an adult trustee to assist in the stewardship of funds. The Active Minds at South Huron, has a goal to erase the stigma against meptal health constantly pfresent at the South Huron District High School. Mental Health had been rela- tively ignored until the death of a student from mental illness last Sep- tember. The grant money of $900, awarded from United Way Perth - Huron, will bring Mental Health Awareness speak- ers to the school and conduct activities and events to help break the stigma. Students and staff will also be taught proper mental health awareness, and healthy ways to maintain mental health. South Huron Nerd Nights, is a regular event hosted by The Cultural Collective. The collec- tive started in January 2016 and has been hold- ing regular events in a studio space in Exeter, however they would like to expand to the nearby community of Huron Park. Nerd Night is an evening where youth and community members can play board games and social- ize and have fun in a safe, public environ- ment. The Nerd Night takes place every two weeks and is open to the public for free. Funding of $1,000 from United Way Perth -Huron will be used to expand the South Huron Nerd Nights to Huron Park, and continue to ensure the event is free and accessible to all. United Way of Perth - Huron helps Children and Youth reach their full potential.
