It- will long be remembered as a day of infamy in
the coloUrfttl history of the Prettiest Town in
Canada.
Everyone will remember where they were and
- what they were doing when the tornado struck off
the shores of Lake Huron. For us, it will be one an
historical marker of enduring significance.
It was a day that literally shook the foundation of
our town and its citizens and set us on a new course
of recovery and rebuilding.
The F-3 tornado that tore apart the, natural land-
scape and destroyed businesses, houses and hopes
and dreams was as destructive a weather everag, as
the province has witnessed in many yearg.'"
In the matter of a few terrifying minutes, the lives
of residents was turned upside down and changed
forever.
The face of our town was changed forever. The
losses people suffered were profound and life
altering.
,But out of the adversity, heartbreak and devasta-
tion has surfaced a community spirit of compassion
and tolerance. People do care about each other and
their community.
As we look back on the news events of the past
year in our annual Year In Review edition this week,
the tornado and its destructive winds obviously
dominate the year's news. And the effects of the
storm and the rebuilding process will form the basis
of our news coverage for many months and years to
Come.
It is an important stage in the redevelopment of
our community.
As we look to close out 2011, our hope is that the
new year will be one of hope, rebuilding and
renewal.
Our community will slowly take on a new shape,
and a new look.
bld,.familiar and comfortable landscapes and
architecture are sadly being removed. Some of the
last vestiges of a previous generation are making
way for the next generation.
And we have to take that perspective.
It is encouraging to see some rebuilding in town.
Houses are being reconstructed and replaced and
while businesses have relocated o temporary loca-
tions, new plans and structures are in the works.
The year 2011 has changed the community and
set us on a new course.
It will not come easy and many people have had
to struggle through insurance and rebuilding issues.
Now is the time to close out the year and look
ahead to new challenges, new beginnings and
brighter future filled with potential and possibilities.
Bring on a new year. - DS
letters to the editor
EdgeFund committed to
revitalizing the comnfulity
ib the editor,
I wa.s pleased to see so many of my farn-
iiy members showing up in the Signal -Star
last week It was great to see my father-in-
law giving a cheque to the Christmas
Bureau, my daughter playing piano
accompaniment at a violin recital and my
son in a Christmas concert at Hoirnesville
Public SchooL
It wasn't so great, however, to see my
name in fim Rudedge's letter lathe editor
wherein he made statements about the
EdgeFund that I see as misleading
Questioning us about the status of
donations in this venue, and with such a
tone, is concerning and I would like to per-
sonally address a number of theissues he
raised.
What is the status of the funds?
Any money we have received from local
donors lay untouched as of the time of this
wridng. We have now completed the proc-
ess of incorporating as a charitable organi-
zation and are working to register our
charity with Revenue Canada for income
tax purposes. It is only when this process
is complete, that we will be in a position to
move forward with our mandate.
This fund was created for a publicity
statement or photo shoot.
Our original benefactors have ties to
Huron County and are great supporters of
other local charities and initiatives. They
made a personal donation based upon
their love for this community and at no
time did anyone request or stipulate any
kind of photo opportunity of any sort.
There was much criticism of the Hent
age Committee.
None of the current members have
made any disparaging remarks of any sort
about any municipal councils or commit-
tees, about the demolition of some build-
ings, or about anything else, for that
matter.
Our only mandate is to generate funds
that will be used to preserve and pmtect
our natural, cultural and built heritage to
improve our urban environment and revi-
talize our community after the tornado.
We will also continue to be involved in
events like Out of the Storm, helping to
fund, organize and carry out such events
to raise mote money, morale and aware-
ness of the damage that has been done to
Goderich and its surrounding area
The EdgeFund's purpose was to cover
the 1096 cost that insurance and the Relief
Fund could not cover.
While this may have been discussed in
early stages in an open forum, these spe-
cific terms were never set, never agreed
upon and were never used as objectives
(A or foundations foL our mandate.
I persgnally have not heard a word
about theEdgellund since that September
Saturday at GDCI...
Anyone Who would like more informa-
tion about the EdgeFund need only send
an email to culture@edgefund.org or
phone any one of ti&
Sincerely.
