ss than four days remain of 2011, a year that
11 be remembered in Goderich as one of
gedy and triumph
we will never forget.
a powerful F-3 tornado
ripped a destructive and devastat-
ing path through town, killing one
person, miner Normand Laberge
and destroying entire neighbour-
hoods in its path.
The storm, packing winds of up to
300km per hour and lasting only a
few minutes came in over the lake
just before 4 p.m., uprooted trees
and destroyed buildings, includ-
ing much of the town's business
district, The Square. Homes were
moved on their foundations,
ripped apart by the winds and
streets were littered with downed
power lines, trees and debris as
residents scrambled in the
immediate aftermath to locate
family and loved ones.
Remarkably, despite the tragic
loss of Laberge, there were few
injuries.
Since that time, the community's
story of recovery and resilience
has been a remarkable and inspir-
ing one.
With a $5 million commitment
from Premier Dalton M'cGuinty,
the community set about to raise
nearly S4 million on its own with
generous support from people
across the province and country.
For Goderich residents, August
21, 2011 was a day of infamy that
will live on in the minds of
everyone.
Here's hoping that 2012 is a year
that will be remembered for the
town's resilience and the indomi-
table spirit and generosity of its
citizens.
