'Patients have had to go outside of Goderich to Stratford or London because of the volume. of patients and many referrals had to go else- where" Alexandra Marine and General Hospi- tal CEO Karen Davis said. "We actively recruited because.there was capacity to do more and now we just need to get people aware of the surgical services available in Goderich." For Dr. Torres; the personal approach to health care locally will prove to be a big advan- tage for patients in Huron County who require scopes, cancer prevention screenings and sur- geries, and can get the expert care locally. "Some patients want procedures done here and they can get a more personal approach to health care," Dr, Tories said. "My style is to build a relationship with the patient, get to OILDAV CRIETINGS The Municipality of Central Huron Council and Municipal Staff join together to wish you peace and serenity this holiday season. , know them and know what's important to them in terms of their personal healthcare." The surgical caseload is slowly growing, with referrals coming from physicians outside of the Goderich area. With the addition of the digital mammography unit at AMGH last month, Dr. Torres has developed a special interest in the early detection and prevention of breast cancer and has become an advocate in .dealing with patients' fears and anxieties quickly. '1 have a special interest in the development of the breast cancer detection and early diag- nosis. We are working closely with new mam- mograms and radiologists who do the reading to be effective," Dr. Torres said. "The proce- dure now is less intrusive and I have training in breast diseases. There is no waiting period, 1 can see patients right away and provide early detection and quick referralif there is a problem." The surgical tandem of Drs. "Dr. Anaand has the experience and we work together well on complex cases and are able to look after patients and provide better continuity of care." CEO Davis also announced recently that Drs. Hasagowa and Heaton of Stratford will provide limited plastic and cosmetic surgery in Goderich on a twice -monthly basis, adding to its sur- gical offerings and full service status. «They will be here twice a month and will provide procedurescovered by °HIP. But there is a need for that," Davis said. "Ontario Cancer Care has recognized the prevalence of skin can- cer in Huron County and that will form part of their treatment" The hospital and its board have demonstrated a commitmentto the surgical program and the provision of full service healthcare. The caveat is that space and funding could limit the prospective growth. "Most of our surgery is out-patient but about 15 per cent require in- patient care at the hospital,' Davis said. "OR is available five -days -a -week and we're committed to the surgical pro- gram. The only limitation is physical space and finite funding. 'We have a strong radiology team and rehab, department so we have to be efficient, lean and strive for quality and improvement. We have to be responsive. and resilient to the aging demographic in. the area but we're building a foundation of care and services: Both Dr. Torres, who.enjoyed her first full summer in Goderich, and Davis, who took on the CEO role in July following the retirement of Bill Thibert, are excited about the prospects for the development of healthcare in Goderich and growth and commitment` of AMGH as a full service provider.
