mittee selection process under fire at Goderich Town Council
.l i. h low)) Council has named its steering committee
public space's master plan, though not all members
py with the selection process.
wing an in -camera session Monday, December 1
I voted 5-2 to appoint the following committee
s:,
Baechler, Donny Rivers, Tom Jasper, Mark Hus-
Davis, Judy Walters and Chris Spoleto. Representing
on the committee are Mayor Deb Shewfelt, Deputy -

telt said the roster represents a good cross-section of
munity, and their role is that of a steering committee
Ihe'ir role k% ill be to sit down with con
.uiltants from the Planning Partnership
for an intensive three-day public ses-
sion this January, to finalize the plans
for reworldng downtown.
"What l see these people doing is
making sure they get through to the
community," he said. "The idea was
selecting people connected to other
things. As far as I'm concerned the
whole town is on the committee."
However, the two councilors tavote
against the appointments were not
happy with the lack of selection
process.
This 1ti not the way you choose com-
mittees," said Coun. Kevin Morrison.
"Weare not going through a process to
allow those who may have wonderful
ideas and input to be allowed on this
committee. This was hand-picked."
The lack of advertisement for the
committee and the fact it was discussed
in -camera means it was anything but a
public process, Morrison said.
"My objection is how they were cho-
sen," he said: "They didn't advertise
they were looking for people. They were
hand-picked by only a few."
Shewfelt said that for it
,Jeering committee, it is not necessary
to advertise for members and anything
they decide would have to be ratified by
a decision from council.
"Did we advertise, no. l think we've
been pretty up front going forward," he
said. "These are people who showed
interest and people who could do the
job:

"The contributions came from a vari-

30 members of the Goderich Medical
Society,' he said. "There were about 40
contributions that came in by Dec. 1 and
even physicians from out-of-town who
worked here inthe past or physicians.
