Following on their promise to receive and distribute tor- nado relief donations where needed most, the united Way of Perth Huron has allocated a total of $17,000 to Goderich area agencies providing serv- ice to tornado victims. United Way Program Review and Allocation Committee mem- bers, including five residents of Goderich, recently made their decision to support Big Brothers Big Sisters North Huron, Huron Safe Homes for Youth, Huron Women's Shel- ter and South Huron Big Brothers Big Sisters. The allocations were based on applications from agencies that cited expenses related to relief efforts. Ryan Erb, Executive Direc- tor said, "agencies have been on the front lines dealing with the people, finding solutions for housing, meeting monetary and physical needs since the day of the disaster. These recipients are among many agencies who provided support and we are pleased to help where we can." 'This special funding comes at a critical time for .our organization;' said Michele Hansen, Executive Director of the Huron Women's Shelter. "The disaster. came when we were already working above and beyond our normal mandate. Our occupancy numbers are way up and so are our costs while normal donations are lower because the community is focused on the disaster. We have provided emergency shelter for some victims of the tor- nado, and we have seen a marked increase in the need for food and clothing items. Without the assistance of the United Way, it would be incredibly difficult to continue meeting the many and growing needs of our clients" The United Way of Perth Huron will make a second distribution to local agencies in the New Year as the aftermath of the Tornado con- tinues. Susan Moffat, Chair of the Program Review and Allocations Committee said: "We know there are many, many needs and our goal is to invest these special donated dollars to assist relief efforts by channeling them through community based agencies." That from Sarah Crawford of the Huron Chamber of Commerce who heard of a food need at the Christmas Bureau and sent out message to her sorority group and the mem- bership of the Chamber of Commerce at 9 p.m. Thursday night. By Friday noon the need was more that generously filled by the business community who responded with donations of food and cash. "The Business Community Rocks" was the response from the•Bureau organizers at Knox. Presbyterian Church, where donations flooded in. "We live in the best community in the world," Sharon Creighton of the Bureau said Friday afternoon. "The call went out and the community responded. The Chamber of Comrperce put the call out and the response was amazing: The Bureau was in need of certain food items such as coffee, crackers, brown sugar and other staples and within 12 hours their space was overflowingwith donations. Businesses like H.O. Jerry donated coffee, money came in from the ladies at town hall, the Alan Avis snack fund found a home at the Bureau and the employee casual Friday donation from Donnelly and Murphy was matched by the firm and forwarded to Christ- mas Burueau. As has been generously demonstrated this week as the Tornado Relief Fund realized $3.7 million In donations, the community is selfless in meeting the needs of others.
