There is a growing gap between those with solid, well -paying jobs and a secure financial future and those who struggle through the adver- sity of unemployment and the daily grind of try- ing to make ends meet and provide for families. Last week, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, suggested that Canada is becoming a nationof great extremes with an hour -glass economy that narrows to a growing mass of low-wage service workers and unemployed people, many of whom are educated young people. And as we know all too well in Goderich, condi- tions can change in a horrifying minute and sud- denly the present changes the entire direction of the future. We want to take every precaution to ensure that everyone's interests and losses are protected in theaftermath of the tornado and: through the rebuilding process. The certainty of our lifestyle and the comfort of small-town life was compromised and shaken and a collectiveeffort and will is needed to secure a new future. It was more than heartwarming to witness the generosity of local residents and thousands from outside the town limits who contributed to the tornado relief efforts. More than $3.7 million was donated to the town and its residents to help replace personal belongings and help restore and rebuild people's homes, businesses and lives. In the face of an uncertain economy, people reached beyond their own adversity and extended a helping hand to a community that binds people across the country and holds a spe- cial place in the hearts of many. Hopefully, the funding is immediately directed to where itis urgently needed to get people back on their feetand on the road to a semblance of recovery. There is comfort in the knowledge that people with means have stepped up in a generous way to provide for those in need in their community. So much more needs to be done right now for the local food hanks and Christmas Bureau, as local charitable services struggle to meet the demands of their services. Don't underestimate the power of the individ- ual ndivid-ual and the difference you can make with a small donation. Ten per cern of the country's popula - tion lives in poverty apd surely the remaining 99 per cent can find a way to make a small difference. Special needs exist in our community right now and we can all make a difference in some way.1.DS THE AUDITOR GENERAL SAYS iT S oor OF Ccwriz ot. S A SAD A H E letters to the editor McGuinty can't see the forest for the trees on wind issue To the editor, Why is it our government can't seem to see the forest for the trees? The rural people of Ontario have been asking for moratorium on wind turbines due to health issues, increased setback placements, land devaluation etc., even before the Green Energy Act was established. Die ignorance of those who voted for it hascaused genuine conflict right across the province. IS it. because you haven't got a mind of your own, or do you (voting member) just follow your leader do as 1 say not what 1 do. His (Premier Dalton McGuinty) new bill of preventing bullying should include, "don't bite .the hand that feeds you. Does rural Ontario ring a bell with you? If you are going to walk the walk, then you'd better talk the talk. The wind turbine company in charge of the St. Columban project has changed its name up to four times and it still doesn't have a Notice to Proceed contract. The company was first known as CASA then Pristine LETTERS TO THE EDITOR GtecAIZOIll Power, then Fort Chicago and now its present name is VERESEN. There are many more turbine com- panies across the province carrying on the same way. There is an old say- ing, "A company is known by the peo- ple it keeps." Maybe the name changing is designed to leave a 'teflon trail' or even a double cover for the fine print. Twenty years from now, no doubt we will have new members on our municipal board and a new slate of MPPs in provincial government and they will be asking4"VWho were the idiots that gpt us into all this mess?" These rusting, worn out dinosaurs of turbines that cover our .province, once known as Keep Ontario Beauti- ful, will be known as the scrap yard of junk, anchored in the ground with. _loads of concrete. The wind turbines that blanket rural Ontario are, and forever will be known, as s curse to those who have to live among them. To those who bear the responsibility! say, "Only a fool would sign a go-ahead project of this magnitude of non -efficiency." Remember, I didn't say you were a fool but if you sign -you will be remembered as that. Sincerely Jim Shea Dublin, Ont. Signal Star welcomes letters to the editor.
