Members of the St. Joseph and Area Historical Soci-
ety will receive this prestigious award from His
Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston,
Governor General of Canada on Monday, Decem-
ber 12, 2011 In Ottawa at Rideau Hall. The
announcement and presentation of the award is
part of the newly constituted Governor General's
History Awards.
In total, seventeen Canadians will be honoured
along with the St. Joseph and Area Historical as part
of the Governor General's History Award presenta-
tion. Profiles of all the recipients, along with stu-
dents' stories and essays will be available at: www.

Obituaries
RUSSELL, Mary Elizabeth (nee
Loney) - Born December 4, 1926 in Elgin
County, Ontario; died November 26, 2011
in Toronto following a lengthy illness.
Survived by her children Anne (Martin),
Catherine, Geoffrey (Deb) and David
(Mina), grandchildren Kate and James, as
well as several step -grandchildren, nieces
and nephews. Also survived by her sister
Eva Kramer. Predeceased by her sister
Helen Moir. A memorial service was held at
Saint James Westminster Church, 115
Askin Street, London, Ontario on Friday
December 2, 1:30 pm. Donations to the
Alzheimer Society are appreciated.
PALMER, Eileen Jeanne
(nee Thauvette)
August 28, 1929 - November 29, 2011 -
it ` was....a peaceful moment, immediately
following the Last Rites, when .Eileen.
Palmer gently slipped away. After a brave
two year struggle with lung disease, Eileen
was joyful to be freed of the physical
constraints associated with this disease.
Eileen will be sadly missed by her siblings,
her children and their spouses, and her
seven grandchildren. Considering that
Eileen was predeceased by her sons, Mark
and Steven; her son-in-law Marty Baechler;
her brothers and. sister (Archie, Leo, Ovila
and Ella); and life-long friend Mike Sawka,
we are comforted that she has received a
warm welcome into Heaven. Loving and
deeply caring Mother of Janice McCormick
(Jim), , Karen Palmer, Tanya Buchanan
(Grant), Michael Palmer (Donna) and
Sandy Church (Doug). Sadly missed by
her grandchildren Morgan, Keegan, and
Megan McCormick (Todd), Remick and
Rhys Palmer, Alex and • Sydney Church.
Wonderful sister to Jerry Thauvette
(Doreen), Pauline Hamelin (Frank), Annette
Meleskie (Ken), and Joe Thauvette
(Evelyn). In addition to her many roles in
raising a Targe family, Eileen also was a
Teacher, Bread -winner, Motel Manager;
and held various positions in her years of
Municipal service with the Town of
Goderich including Councillor, Deputy
Reeve, Reeve and finally Mayor for a
period of 11 years. She was most proud of
two accomplishments achieved during her
tenure as Mayor: firstly, the Rotary Cove,
Boardwalk and Beach Master Pian and,
secondly, the Menesetung Bridge and
Hiking Trails. Special thanks to all of
Eileen's friends and the amazing staff at
The Mountainview Terrace in Georgetown
who truly made the past year a special one
for Eileen. The staff at the Georgetown
Hospital are forever in our prayers for the
terrific treatment during Eileen's final 48
hours in their gentle care. A celebration of
Eileen's life will take place at St. Peter's
Catholic Church on North Street in
Goderich at 11 am on December 28'x'. 2011.
The family will be hosting a lunch at the
Knights of Columbus Hall immediately
following the church service. All are most
welcome to attend. In lieu of flowers,
donations may be made to the Georgetown
Hospital Foundation - COPD Rehab

GIESBRECHT, Edward - Passed away
suddenly on November 26, 2011, in his 73'
year. Lovingly remembered by his children
Todd, Taylor (Margaret), Margie Herlufsen
(Andrew), and Lance (Melanie). Proud
Papa of Ashley (Alec), Natalie (Jason),
Cody, Tanner, Samantha and Kenzie.
Remembered lovingly by Clara Anne
Jewell. Survived by his sisters Helen Quapp
(Bill), Anne Klinko (Thom) Margaret Delaet
(Ben) and many nieces and . nephews.
Predeceased by his parents Henry and
Margaret (nee Warkentin). sister Margaret

Goderich, on Tuesday, November 29, 2011.

DELL, Svava Einarsson Died
peacefully and gently as she lived, at the
age of 94. Born to Gudbjorg and
Sigurstelnn Einarsson in Arborg, MB, Svava
was raised by her Mom,. after her young
father's untimely death. After high school in
Arborg, Svava attended Winnipeg Normal
School in 1937, to become a teacher, ` with
further summer school sessions at the
University of Manitoba. She then met
Stanley Dell, and they were married in.
Winnipeg in 1942. The couple moved to the
Red Lake District of Ontario, a thriving gold
mining community to this day, where they
were amongst the first pioneers in the area.
Svava taught in the district schools over the
years, raising their 3 children, Brian, Fern
and Wendy, and from 1956-2000 (44
years), she was there to support her
husband and the family businesses, Dell
Construction, and Balmer -town Builders
Supplies. Svava was and avid curler, and
enjoyed playing into her 80' year. She and
:Stan were great supporters of the Kinsmen
• Club of Balmertown, enjoying these
friendships, conventions and charity works
as lifetime members. Svava was also a
member of the United Church Women and
held several offices over the years. Never a
year went by without the companionship of
many a dog who became nature -study and
trekking companions, along with an
assortment of cats all part of the family„ She
remained in her home in Balmertown until
her 93' year, with her son Brian. In• late
2010 she moved to Goderich to be cared
for at the Maitland Manor and to be with
youngest daughter Wendy. She will be
sorely missed for her exceptional sweet,
caring nature. An incredible Mother, a
wonderful grandma to her 6 grandsons and
two great granddaughters. Predeceased by
her husband Stan in 1997 and brother Einar
Einarsson (1987) (Beatrice). Survived by
her 3 children Brian Dell of Balmertown,
ON., Fern Dell Gosselin (Michael) of
Kamloops, BC., and Wendy Dell Grace
(John) of Goderich, ON. Her grandchildren
Robert Gosselin (Adrienne) and great
granddaughters, Elodie and Delphine;
Brendan Dell, Alexander Dell, Jonathon
Grace, Jordan Grace and Joel Grace.
Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A friend forever.
